Pendry San Diego

Pendry San Diego opened in February 2017 in the Gaslamp Quarter, the launch property for Montage International's upscale lifestyle brand Pendry. The 317-room, new-build hotel runs five distinct restaurant and bar concepts, including Lionfish and the rooftop Pool House, aimed as much at the neighborhood's nightlife crowd as at overnight guests.

The place

Pendry San Diego stands at 550 J Street, at 5th Avenue and J Street in the heart of the Gaslamp Quarter — downtown San Diego's densest concentration of restaurants, bars and historic Victorian-era storefronts. The address puts guests inside the neighborhood's nightlife rather than adjacent to it, a few blocks from the San Diego Convention Center and the waterfront.

The concept

Pendry San Diego was the launch property for Montage International's Pendry brand, a new-build hotel designed by ACRM Architects that opened in February 2017 as the company's entry into the upscale lifestyle segment, distinct from its ultra-luxury Montage resorts. The 317-room hotel, including 36 suites, was built to anchor a stretch of the Gaslamp Quarter with a multi-venue food-and-nightlife program rather than a single signature restaurant, a format Pendry has since repeated in later properties.

Dining & wellness

The hotel runs a cluster of distinct venues rather than one central restaurant: Lionfish serves coastal seafood, Provisional is a more casual restaurant-and-marketplace concept, Fifth & Rose operates as the hotel bar, Oxford Social Club runs as a nightlife venue, and Nason's Beer Hall nods to the building's history. A rooftop Pool House adds a pool deck and bar above the Gaslamp Quarter's rooftops.
