Baby Grand

Baby Grand, a 31-room boutique hotel from San Diego's Consortium Holdings, opened May 14, 2026 on Coronado Island after a six-year, $18 million transformation of the old La Avenida Inn motel. Design studio Post Company built a maximalist, vintage-fantasy interior around private lagoons, seashell headboards and a hidden oyster bar, directly across the street from the Hotel del Coronado.

The concept

CH Projects, the San Diego hospitality group behind The Lafayette Hotel & Club, spent six years and roughly $18 million converting the old La Avenida Inn — expanded from 29 to 31 rooms — into Baby Grand, working with design studio Post Company on an unabashedly theatrical, vintage-extravagance look: seashell and clamshell headboards, rock sculptures and statuary, and a former parking lot rebuilt into a roughly 6,000-square-foot garden with layered overgrown landscaping, gas-lit torches and a small lagoon. It's a renovation of an existing two-story motel building rather than new construction, distinct from The Bower Coronado a few blocks away, which claimed the island's first ground-up hotel in over three decades.
