Moxy Auckland is a 16-level, NZ$75 million tower on Wakefield Street in the university district, built using New Zealand's first attempt at high-rise modular hotel construction — 201 prefabricated room modules stacked onto a concrete core. First announced for a January 2023 opening, the project has slipped for years and, as of the most recent reporting found, still had no independently confirmed completion date.

The place

Moxy Auckland sits on Wakefield Street, in the Learning Quarter at the edge of the CBD near the University of Auckland, AUT and the Auckland City Art Gallery, with the Auckland Domain a short walk away — a university and civic district rather than the waterfront cluster where most of Auckland's recent luxury openings have landed.

The concept

The project is New Zealand's first attempt at a high-rise hotel built with modular construction: 201 prefabricated room modules were manufactured off-site and stacked onto a poured concrete core, a method the developers pitched as faster and cheaper than conventional building for a 16-level, NZ$75 million tower. In practice the schedule has not borne that out — first pitched for a January 2023 opening in early coverage, the project slipped for years, with 2026 trade reporting still describing it as under construction rather than complete. Moxy's standard playbook is unchanged from other markets: compact, tech-loaded rooms aimed at younger and value-conscious travellers, paired with communal social space designed to work harder than the guest rooms themselves. A 2021 announcement described flexible rooms guests can reconfigure, a fitness centre, meeting rooms and a communal table in the lobby for working or socialising — standard Moxy fittings rather than anything Auckland-specific.

Dining & wellness

Early plans describe a Moxy Kitchen and Bar offering a la carte dining around an inner courtyard, in keeping with the brand's usual bar-as-lobby format, though this has not been confirmed as built or operating.
