The place
The hotel sits at One Queen Street in the Auckland CBD, occupying the upper floors of the Deloitte Centre office tower within Commercial Bay, the harbourside retail, dining and office precinct developed by listed landlord Precinct Properties. The address puts guests directly above the Britomart transport interchange and the ferry terminal, with the Viaduct Harbour, the waterfront promenade and the CBD's retail core all within walking distance. Most of the 139 rooms face the Waitematā Harbour and the volcanic cones beyond it, and the hotel markets itself as New Zealand's first luxury hotel to hold a 6 Green Star rating, tying its waterfront position to the sustainability credentials of the tower it occupies.
The concept
InterContinental Auckland is the first hotel venture for Precinct Properties, which developed the Commercial Bay precinct and brought in IHG to operate the property under its top-tier InterContinental brand. Architecture is by Warren and Mahoney, with interiors led by Warren and Mahoney alongside design studio Technē and FF&E and styling work by Space Studio. The foyer is built around dark timber and textured stone intended to echo New Zealand's volcanic landscape, and the design threads a Māori art and craft programme throughout the property: each room includes a whāriki (woven panel) selected with weaver Beronia Scott and the Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei weaving collective, alongside a lobby installation by artist Nike Savvas and room photography by Fiona Pardington. The hotel opened with a formal welcome from Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei, and its 139 rooms and suites are positioned toward both business travellers using Commercial Bay's office towers and leisure guests drawn to the waterfront address, with Club InterContinental rooms feeding into a dedicated Club lounge that opened in June 2024. IHG's Australasia and Pacific managing director Matthew Tripolone framed the opening as a bet on Auckland drawing more international business and leisure travel, positioning the hotel as the city's new benchmark for luxury stays.
Dining & wellness
Dining centres on Advieh Restaurant and Bar, an all-day venue from chef Gareth Stewart serving Middle Eastern-inspired food built on New Zealand produce; it was named the country's Hotel Restaurant of the Year in 2024. A rooftop bar on level 21, independently run by hospitality operator Five Fellas, opened later in 2024 with harbour views over the CBD. The hotel also runs a 24-hour fitness centre with direct access into the Commercial Bay retail precinct, though no dedicated spa has been reported.
