M Social Auckland
A tired 1970s waterfront tower is stripped to its structure and relaunched under Millennium & Copthorne's new lifestyle brand, M Social.
Open · December 2017
M Social Auckland reopened in December 2017 after Millennium & Copthorne stripped its ageing waterfront tower — long known as Copthorne Hotel, Harbour City — back to its structure, seismically strengthened it, and relaunched it under its new M Social lifestyle brand. The 190-room hotel sits on Quay Street opposite Princes Wharf, with interiors by Aedas Interiors built around a Kiwiana design theme.

196-200 Quay Street, opposite Princes Wharf on Auckland's waterfront, next to the PwC Tower.
The concept
The 12-storey tower at 196-200 Quay Street was built in the 1970s and traded for decades first as a Travelodge, then as Copthorne Hotel, Harbour City, part of the Millennium & Copthorne group. Rather than a routine refresh, the owner stripped the building back to its structure, replaced its building services and seismically strengthened it to A-grade over roughly two years, at a cost reported in the tens of millions of dollars. It reopened in December 2017 as M Social Auckland, only the second hotel worldwide under Millennium & Copthorne's design-led M Social brand, after Singapore. Aedas Interiors handled the interiors, built around a 1970s New Zealand and Kiwiana theme — hanging wooden swings as lobby art, pastel cushions and dangling bucket lighting.
Dining & wellness
Beast & Butterflies, an all-day dining restaurant and lounge with a long, sunken bar, serves Pacific-inspired, locally sourced food; a 24-hour gym rounds out the amenities.
