The Hotel Britomart

The Hotel Britomart opened October 1, 2020, on Galway Street in Auckland's Britomart precinct, becoming New Zealand's first hotel to earn a 5 Green Star rating. Designed by Cheshire Architects and developed locally by Cooper and Company, the 104-room property pairs a new 10-floor tower with two refurbished heritage buildings, and hosts chef Tom Hishon's seafood restaurant kingi in the laneway next door.

The place

The hotel sits on Galway Street in the Britomart precinct, Auckland's restored waterfront quarter of heritage warehouses, boutiques and restaurants, with some rooms looking over the Waitematā Harbour and others onto the city skyline or Takutai Square.

The concept

The Hotel Britomart pairs a new 10-floor tower, designed by Cheshire Architects, with the refurbishment of two adjoining heritage buildings — neither previously operating as a hotel — as part of Cooper and Company's long-running rejuvenation of the Britomart precinct, under way since 2003. It opened as New Zealand's first hotel to achieve a 5 Green Star rating from the New Zealand Green Building Council, built around locally sourced materials: hand-made bricks, interior timber accents, organic cotton sheets, built-in sofas, hand-crafted vases and a mini-library of New Zealand books in every room. Its five Landing Suites extend the coastal design language of Cooper and Company's Bay of Islands property, The Landing, into the centre of the city.

Dining & wellness

kingi, an all-day restaurant built around sustainable seafood and led by executive chef Tom Hishon, occupies the atmospheric laneway of the adjoining heritage Masonic Building next door to the hotel itself.
