JW Marriott Auckland has 286 bedrooms, split between 271 rooms and 15 suites, in a tower that has changed flag twice since it opened in 1984 as The Regent, New Zealand's first five-star hotel. It later became the Stamford Plaza Auckland. The conversion to JW Marriott was done in phases rather than in one closure, and the restaurant Trivet is the centre of the food offer.

The place

The hotel stands at 22-26 Albert Street, in the Auckland CBD, within walking distance of the Sky Tower and the waterfront. Auckland Airport is about 25 kilometres away. Views from the upper floors take in the harbour, the Sky Tower and the city.

The concept

The building dates from the 1980s and has had three identities: The Regent, then Stamford Plaza, then JW Marriott. Press reports put the 2021 purchase of the property at a record price of about NZ$170 million, and the refurbishment budget is reported at between NZ$20 million and NZ$35 million depending on the source, carried out in phases. The brand describes the hotel around a mindfulness and wellness idea, and a multi-sensory garden space was part of the plan.

Rooms start at 36 square metres at entry level and run through Junior and Governor rooms up to a Presidential Suite of 133 square metres. The tower keeps its original footprint, so the room mix reflects a 1980s plan rather than a new build.

Wellness facilities include an indoor heated pool of 14 metres, a dry sauna, a vitality pool, treatment rooms and a 24-hour Technogym fitness centre. An Executive Lounge sits alongside the standard rooms.

Dining & wellness

Trivet is the signature restaurant, led by head chef Wallace Mua, a former team chef for the All Blacks, and it opened quietly in October. A 100-cover buffet restaurant and a lobby bar complete the main dining floor.

Kureta, a teppanyaki venue, and Forum Bar are listed on the brand's pages, and a speciality dining room with an on-site herb garden was part of the plans.

I would highly recommend that staying at JW Marriot when travelling to Auckland. Simply because you will get caring from the staff. I had a bad beginning of Auckland strip because of the rented car at the airport. But, Claudia (the receptionist at front desk) is so patient to listen to us, and her smiling face really makes you feel warm. Indeed, all the staff are so kind and helpful. Besides of the staff, gym room equipment together with the body mass check machine are bravo. Particularly, I like the water station at the floor. And, no complaint for the room at all. I had a great stay. Thank you.

Marriott We very much enjoyed the JWMarriott several times during our long term visit in New Zealand, beginning, end, and in between. The contemporary and elegant building and welcoming hotel has a great location. The breakfast buffet offers an excellent variety of foods, more than enough for all kinds of dietary needs and interests. We found the beds to be excellent, supportive with wonderful sheets. However, by far it’s the staff employed in every department that make a huge difference. The employees are thoughtful, and helpful with positive attitudes to assist you. Thank you to the many who made our stays so enjoyable: Joshi, Karen, Monika, Milano, Jamie, Erhard, David, Hibiki, Campbell, Sheba, Miriam, and everyone else who makes this place hum. Well done.

Having a long stay here the service has been excellent, and the amenities are very good, especially the pool and sauna, which I have used a lot. All of the staff are exceptionally polite and helpful, the rooms are well presented and very clean with comfortable beds. I am happy our stay has been extended here, I will have no problems being here for four weeks, breakfast offers plenty of choice, so I won't be getting bored with it, overall a great stay so far.

We had a lovely stay at the JW Marriott using points for our final 3 nights of our 5 week NZ tour. Great facilities, amenities very comfortable and well thought out rooms. Exceptional quality of fittings in the rooms. Great location to the waterfront and central cbd. Overall the staff across the board was superb - bell staff, front desk, concierge, housekeeping, Trivet restaurant and the Executive Club Lounge were friendly and engaging. We would like to specifically call out Nisheet in the Club Lounge. He is an exceptional ambassador for the hotel. Immensely hard working, genuine engaging with guests. As an intern I really hope that when he finishes his Hospitality studies that Marriott finds a way to keep him. It would be a tremendous loss to not do so. Thank you for an amazing stay.

Had a great overnight stay at this JW. Prompt check in with a modest upgrade to a club level room (LT Platinum) plus a 4pm checkout (great for our evening flight out the next day). This was the last night of a 17 day New Zealand odyssey so we’re just looking to relax after so much touring around the country. At just after 4pm our check in timing was perfect for the concierge lounge 4 to 8pm happy hour! Hot option, (nice) cheese and charcuterie, salad bar, etc., plus a nice selection of local wine (1 sparkling, 3 white, 1 rose and 3 red) plus beer and a limited selection of spirits. More than enough to not require a dinner out after and the service was attentive with friendly table service always keeping your wine glass full. Being newly renovated our room was very nice with all expected amenities, including a large, deep soaker tub. Breakfast in the lounge was fine, if standard, again with friendly service. Overall lounge was well above North American standards, but breakfast would be similar (ref choices of scrambled, eggs, bacon, hash browns, plus standard fruit, breads, pastries, etc.) but I’d still say better than NA standard for quality, but no where near what we received in Marriott concierge lounges on our recent trip to Thailand, for comparison. Only shortcoming compared to other lounges would be, outside breakfast and HH, lounge only has drinks available; new the worst concierge loungess I’ve been in have some chips, pretzels, trail mix, etc., out for snacks - but clearly only a minor quibble. Also utilized the pool area which was nice and peaceful mid afternoon as we had it all to ourselves. All and all happy with our stay and highly recommend, especially if you have the Marriott status to utilize the lounge.
