The place

Purpose-built 16-story tower at 300 Terry Avenue North in South Lake Union, in the middle of Seattle's tech corridor around Amazon's headquarters.

The concept

Astra is an independent Tribute Portfolio hotel run by San Francisco's Stanford Hotels Corporation, built from the ground up rather than adapted from an older structure — a rarity in a neighborhood otherwise dominated by office towers. The design draws on 1960s Seattle optimism, the era of the Century 21 Exposition and the Space Needle, translated into a fairly conventional big-box new-build with large-windowed rooms and light installations by artist Chris Wood in the public spaces. It reads as a business-traveler hotel first, positioned toward the surrounding tech campuses, with the rooftop bar functioning as its main lifestyle draw.

Dining & wellness

Otium Grill & Greens is the main restaurant, Caffé Ladro supplies coffee off the lobby, and Altitude Sky Lounge is a 16th-floor rooftop bar with regular DJ programming; the fitness center is equipped with Peloton bikes.
