SonoLux

SonoLux opened in November 2025 at 225 Saint-Jacques Street in Old Montreal, a few steps from Notre-Dame Basilica. It occupies a heritage bank building that stood empty for decades and was restored for about 18 million dollars. The hotel has 36 rooms over eight floors, with art in the lobby and on every floor, and is the latest project of Épik Collection, an independent group of Quebec hoteliers.

The place

Notre-Dame Basilica is a few steps away. The address puts guests in the middle of Old Montreal, on foot from the port and the cobbled streets, and the building is listed as a heritage property.

The concept

Geiger Huot signed the architecture, Zabb Design the interiors and Melatti Construction handled the work. Sources disagree on the year the building went up, 1914 or 1915. Solotech designed and installed the audiovisual system.

The hotel treats itself as a gallery. The inaugural exhibition, Seeds of R/Evolution, was organised by Cheryl Sim of PHI and shows ten works by Santiago Tamayo Soler, Lisa Jackson, Jasmina Cibic, Skawennati, Maureen Bradley, Danielle Comeau, Katherine Melançon, MUE, Kosisochukwu Nnebe and Sahar Homami. It ran until April 2026, and the hotel plans two exhibitions a year, so the rooms change with the program.

The permanent piece is The Cosmic Code, a digital installation in the lobby by Behaviour Interactive with SonoLux. Its generative visuals respond to music and to the movement of visitors. Rooms, described by one reviewer as minimal, are in warm earth tones, and rates run from 400 to 700 dollars depending on season and availability.

Dining & wellness

LUMI is the lobby restaurant, led by chef Graham Hood. The menu changes with the season and is offered à la carte or as nine- or fourteen-course tasting menus. It is open Tuesday to Saturday from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Subterra is the audio lounge downstairs, with jazz, soul, funk, dub and hip-hop. Hood and pastry chef Nadiia Manchuk prepare shareable dishes and desserts, and Clément Wallas makes the cocktails. It is open Tuesday to Saturday until midnight. Fred Everything, the hotel's musical curator, shapes the sound and the DJ sets and concerts.
