The concept Maison Grinder is the first hotel from Groupe Grinder, a Montreal restaurant group better known for its dining rooms than for hospitality, and the 15 rooms were designed by Andréanne Guillemette, previously with the well-known Montreal design studio Zébulon Perron, around the idea of an urban refuge: warm, intimate spaces finished with Québec-made furniture, walnut flooring and heated natural-stone bathrooms. A rooftop terrace and lounge, the Terrasse Maison Grinder, tops the building with a 2,000-square-foot space and city views toward downtown Montreal.
Dining & wellness Two of Groupe Grinder's existing restaurants, Makro and Grinder, occupy the ground floor, giving guests direct access to the group's established food-and-beverage identity rather than a purpose-built hotel restaurant. The rooftop Terrasse Maison Grinder serves drinks alongside hot and cold small plates.
Our take Letting an established restaurant group's own dining rooms anchor a small hotel, rather than commissioning a new F&B concept from scratch, is a shrewd way to open with a ready-made identity: the real test is whether a 15-room property can generate enough repeat local traffic through Makro and Grinder to make the hospitality side worthwhile on its own.

Great location near some excellent restaurants. Easy to walk to the old port and to downtown. Our room and our bed were very comfortable. We loved our little terrace to sit out to have breakfast, to read or have a glass of wine. The breakfast was good. We cancelled it our last morning so we could go to a nearby creperie for breakfast. Rooftop bar is very nice. The only cons were that there are a lot of stairs (no elevator), no places to unpack clothes and no hooks to hang up towels.
My hubby and I were here briefly for a concert at the Bell Centre, only about a 15-min walk away. We were greeted so nicely with no additional issues at check-in. Beautiful ambiance and amenities including robes, speaker with soundproof rooms, snacks, drinks, etc. It was a grown and sexy hotel room, my husband and I absolutely LOVED it. It was so relaxing and low key! I wish we could’ve seen their rooftop terrace but we will return for that!

Room; The room was very small and the shower is open and see-through. Which would be ideal for a solo traveller or a couple, but not great for 2 friends. It also gets cold when you’re in the shower. I thought that maybe there would be an optional shower cover or an option/switch to cloud the glass (similar to bathrooms in Mexico) for some privacy. May have been our mistake not double checking the hotels description, but in general I think the design could have been better.
Breakfast; the nice thing about the breakfast is that they bring it to your room between 7am - 10am. But there is only one option for breakfast. The description is misleading because it says breakfast is included. Which I thought meant some sort of small buffet. The breakfast didn’t really taste that great either. Other people were leaving their breakfast out in the hallway, untouched. On the bright side the food in the area was absolutely amazing! Super close to the hotel.
Wifi/tv; for our last two nights the wifi connection for the tv was disconnected. For some reason it worked on our phones but not the tv. We tried explaining that to the front desk and they said it would fix itself. This is not directly an issue with the hotel, just a note on our experience.
NOTE: on Fridays and Saturday's the bar downstairs is super loud. I needed ear plugs to block out the nose. But this only occurs on the weekend.
The positives; amazing bedding, great location, friendly people, great view, nice rooftop. I would recommend for a couple or a solo traveller. Also the staff was mostly helpful besides the wifi issue.
Design over any function. No Elevators and Over 20 steep stairs just get to the reception, then another 20 stairs to get to your room! This should have been posted and apparently they do get complaints but don’t publish this because people would not book.
We were lucky at arrival and had a lovely young lady to help us with the luggage to our room and we were not so lucky on checkout, a different young girl did not want to provide help and did not have anyone designated available.
Sadly the design is tasteful , but absolutely not functional. Open shower without a door so the water pours out and it’s exposed glass shower- 0 privacy with soap/shampoo dispensers and removable shower head mounted at level below the waist of an average person.
Very tiny, no space for luggage or a table to place a breakfast tray to actually eat it (breakfast was nice and simple: yogurt, few fruits, granola ).
Only one towel hook, so nowhere to hang more than one towel or place your clothing. Nice robes, bedding.
Very dark interior, lighting is cool but does not allow you to see much. Oddly a Milk Frother provided, but not the milk??
Looks good just not functional for a hotel really.
Design over function and the hiding the fact that there are over 40 steep steps and No Elevator is a huge issue. Location is not in the center.
So if you are one person with a tiny suitcase or a back pack staying only a night and need aerobic workout- this is a nice hotel. We were very disappointed by this so called “boutique” dwelling at this price point.
We stayed from April 10 to April 12.
There are clearly many strong points, but also several weak ones.
On the positive side, the decor is very well done and the overall atmosphere is pleasant. The bed is super comfortable, which made the nights very restful, and the shower was excellent but the rooms are very dusty and the wine glasses in our rooms were filthy.
Some other aspects really need improvement as well. The breakfast is a major weak point: not only was it the same every morning, but the portions of banana bread were absolutely ridiculous so small they could barely hold together and would fall apart.
Finally, the service was not great, especially upon check in in the afternoon. The place is supposed to be relaxing, but the receptionist seemed on edge very stressed and all over the place. to the point where it felt almost contagious, which really really ruined the atmosphere and kind of goes against the whole point of the hotel…
Overall, it’s a place with a lot of potential, but several important details need to be improved for the experience to truly live up to expectations.
For the price we’re paying they could definitely invest in a better breakfast or atleast better portions and they could invest in some customer service classes for their staff.
