The Rubenstein Hotel opened in time for Carnival season 2024, a 40-room boutique hotel built into the previously non-hotel upper floors of six historic buildings above the century-old Rubenstein's menswear store at Canal and St. Charles. Developed by hotelier Joe Jaeger's J Collection Hotels in partnership with the Rubenstein family, the project was delayed more than three years by the pandemic from its original late-2020 target.

The place

104 St. Charles Avenue, at the corner of Canal Street in the Central Business District, above the Rubenstein's menswear store that has traded on the corner for close to a century.

The concept

The Rubenstein family, longtime owners of the Canal Street clothing store bearing their name, partnered with hotelier Joe Jaeger's J Collection Hotels in 2019 to convert the upper floors of six connected historic buildings behind and above the store into a hotel — space that had never previously operated as a hotel. The project was originally due to open in late 2020, but the pandemic pushed the timeline back more than three years to early 2024, in time for Carnival season. The finished hotel has two entrances on St. Charles Avenue, one leading directly into a dedicated bar rather than through the retail store, and is managed by Aimbridge Hospitality, which also runs several other J Collection properties in New Orleans.

Dining & wellness

The Madison Shop Bar, reached from its own St. Charles Avenue entrance, anchors the hotel's food-and-beverage offer; sources reviewed did not detail a separate full restaurant.
