Omni New Orleans

Omni Hotels & Resorts will build a 1,000-room headquarters hotel directly across from the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, on the site of the former Sugar Mill venue. Approved by the New Orleans City Council in June 2026, the roughly $600 million project is the city's first large hotel construction since 1982, with 100,000 square feet of meeting space, a rooftop pool deck and a spa targeted for 2029.

The place

Across Convention Center Boulevard from the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, on the site of the former Sugar Mill event venue in the Central Business District/Warehouse District.

The concept

Omni New Orleans is a purpose-built, 1,000-room headquarters hotel developed jointly with the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center Authority to give the city its first large-scale hotel directly tied to the convention center — something New Orleans has lacked despite the venue's size. The New Orleans City Council approved the required zoning change 7-0 on 24 June 2026 after a recommendation from the City Planning Commission, following more than 450 people participating in public meetings during the planning process. At roughly $600 million, it would be the city's first large hotel construction since 1982 and its fifth-largest hotel, with about 100,000 square feet of meeting space, a rooftop pool deck and a destination spa. Construction is expected to begin in the near term following the June 2026 approval, with the project's authority citing potential economic impact of around $213 million a year; the timeline has also been linked in local coverage to New Orleans' bid to host Super Bowl 2031, though that connection is not confirmed by the project's own announcements.

Dining & wellness

Several restaurants and bars are planned as part of the project; individual concepts have not yet been announced.
