Canopy by Hilton Chicago Central Loop

Hilton's lifestyle brand opened its first Chicago hotel inside the century-old former headquarters of the Chicago and North Western Railway, an office building that had never housed a hotel room until this 2021 conversion. The 215-room Canopy shares the landmark structure with a separately branded Hilton Garden Inn, but keeps its own restaurant, Depot 226, and its own identity within it.

The place

The hotel occupies 226 W. Jackson Boulevard in Chicago's Central Loop, a block from Union Station and the Chicago River, in a stretch of downtown built around law firms and back-office towers rather than hospitality. The address puts guests within walking distance of Willis Tower, the Loop's theater district, and the Metra and Amtrak platforms at Union Station: a location built for commuters and travelers passing through, which is precisely the audience Hilton is testing with a lifestyle brand here.

The concept

The building served as headquarters for the Chicago and North Western Railway, one of the Midwest's dominant rail operators through the first half of the twentieth century, and was 117 years old at the time of the hotel's 2021 opening: a structure that had spent its entire history as office space before Chicago-based Phoenix Development Partners converted it into a hotel. Canopy by Hilton Chicago Central Loop, Hilton's first lifestyle-brand hotel in the city, occupies 215 of the building's 350 total rooms; the remainder operates as a separately branded Hilton Garden Inn under the same roof and the same Aimbridge Hospitality management, a dual-brand arrangement more common in convention hotels than in landmark conversions. Interior designer Anderson/Miller kept the original lobby staircases and circulation and layered in artwork referencing the building's railway history: a literal but well-handled adaptive-reuse brief that pairs preserved period details with a contemporary lifestyle fit-out rather than a full gut renovation.

Dining & wellness

Depot 226, led by executive chef Tim Letsos, is the hotel's restaurant and the most direct nod to the building's history in its own name; it anchors the ground floor alongside a bar and an outdoor terrace. Canopy's signature amenity, complimentary neighborhood bikes, is here too, oriented toward guests exploring the Loop and the riverwalk rather than staying on property. There's a fitness center, but no spa or pool: this is a city hotel built around a restaurant, a bar, and a walkable downtown address, not a resort amenity stack.
