The place
The hotel sits on Clyde Street on the banks of the River Clyde in Glasgow city centre, part of the same stretch of waterfront regeneration as its Clayton Hotel neighbour.
The concept
Virgin Hotels Glasgow, which opened on 21 August 2023, is a purpose-built property developed with Silk Property Group and Twenty First Architects, with guestrooms designed by London firm Four-by-Two under the direction of Virgin Hotels' creative director Teddy Mayer. It is Virgin Hotels' second European property and its first in Scotland. The hotel is built around Virgin's signature 'Chambers' room concept — wood sliding doors separating a sleep and lounge area from a dressing zone, deliberately engineered to feel larger than the square footage suggests — applied here across 240 rooms and suites with local, Clydeside-referencing design details layered over the brand's standard playbook.
Dining & wellness
Commons Club, the flagship all-day restaurant and bar, anchors the hotel's food and drink offer, alongside the rooftop-style Highyard. Further outlets — the Funny Library Coffee Shop and the Rocks on Fox Street whisky bar — were slated to open after the hotel's launch.
News
January 16, 2025 — Administrators have completed the sale of the former Virgin Hotels Glasgow building to Belfast-based Martin Property Group, just over a year after the hotel's sudden closure. The buyer says it plans to fit out the remaining 77 unfinished bedrooms and reopen the 240-room riverside property; work is now under way, with a reopening targeted around 2027 — and no indication so far that it will trade under the Virgin flag again.
December 19, 2023 — Virgin Hotels Glasgow has closed with immediate effect, four months after its 21 August 2023 opening, with around 130 jobs lost. The closure follows the collapse of Lloyds Developments Ltd, owner of the Clyde Street building, which was placed into administration by its lenders on 1 December 2023. Virgin Hotels operated the property but did not own it; guests with bookings were rebooked or refunded.
