Clayton Hotel Glasgow City

Clayton Hotel Glasgow City opened in November 2022 inside the long-derelict, Grade A-listed Custom House on Clyde Street, giving the 19th-century riverside landmark its first-ever life as a hotel. A new 303-room tower rises behind the restored historic hall, which now houses the reception, ballroom and restaurant.

The place

The hotel occupies Custom House on Clyde Street, a Grade A-listed 19th-century building designed by John Taylor on the riverfront near St Enoch. The building served as the Procurator Fiscal's Office until it moved out in 2007, after which it stood derelict for around fifteen years.

The concept

Clayton Hotel Glasgow City pairs the restored historic Custom House, whose reception, ballroom and event spaces occupy the original 19th-century block, with a new 16-storey tower built alongside and linked by a glazed atrium. It is the first time the building has operated as a hotel, and its opening in November 2022 marked a significant piece of the wider regeneration of the Clyde Street and St Enoch waterfront. As a Clayton, the brand sits at the more design-conscious end of Dalata's portfolio, and the hotel leans into the building's customs-and-excise history for its interiors and dining concept, contrasting the ornate original hall with the plainer, contemporary guest tower.

Dining & wellness

Custom House Restaurant & Bar serves breakfast through to dinner in the original historic hall, with a menu that nods to the exotic goods once processed through the customs house. There is also an on-site coffee shop and a 24-hour gym.
