An archipelago inside the reef

The Whitsundays are a group of 74 islands off the central Queensland coast, almost entirely within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. Airlie Beach, on the mainland, is the main gateway town and departure point for day trips and multi-day sailing charters, while Hamilton Island, the only Whitsunday island with its own commercial airport, functions as a resort hub in its own right.

Whitehaven Beach

The single most famous sight in the group is Whitehaven Beach, a roughly 7-kilometre stretch of sand on Whitsunday Island that is 98.9% pure silica — fine enough that it doesn't retain heat the way ordinary sand does, so it stays cool underfoot even at midday. At its northern end, Hill Inlet is known for the shifting, swirling pattern where the tide pushes sand and turquoise water together, best seen from the Hill Inlet Lookout or by seaplane.

Getting out on the water

Sailing is the default way to experience the Whitsundays — bareboat charters, skippered yachts and larger day-trip catamarans all operate out of Airlie Beach and Hamilton Island, typically combining a stop at Whitehaven Beach with snorkelling or diving on one of the fringing reef systems nearby, such as Hardy Reef or Bait Reef. Because the islands sit inside the Great Barrier Reef itself rather than requiring a long boat trip out to it, reef access here is faster than from most mainland Queensland launch points.
