New hotels in Whitsundays

The Whitsundays are an archipelago rather than a town, so "where to stay" means choosing an island, or the mainland, before choosing a hotel. This guide tracks four properties across that spread: InterContinental Hayman Great Barrier Reef, which reopened under a new flag in 2019; Elysian Retreat, ten villas on Long Island; Heart Hotel and Gallery Whitsundays, a boutique build in Airlie Beach on the mainland; and Le Méridien Lindeman Island Resort & Spa, due in September 2027 on an island empty since 2012.

An archipelago inside the reef

The Whitsundays are a group of 74 islands off the central Queensland coast, almost entirely within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. Airlie Beach, on the mainland, is the main gateway town and departure point for day trips and multi-day sailing charters, while Hamilton Island, the only Whitsunday island with its own commercial airport, functions as a resort hub in its own right.

The islands covered here sit at different points of the group. Hayman is the northernmost and the closest private island to the outer reef, reached by launch or helicopter from Hamilton Island. Long Island lies close to the mainland south of Airlie Beach and is largely national park. Lindeman, further south, is about twenty minutes by boat from Hamilton Island Airport. Airlie Beach is not an island at all: it is the coastal town everyone leaves from.

Whitehaven Beach

The single most famous sight in the group is Whitehaven Beach, a roughly 7-kilometre stretch of sand on Whitsunday Island that is 98.9% pure silica: fine enough that it doesn't retain heat the way ordinary sand does, so it stays cool underfoot even at midday. At its northern end, Hill Inlet is known for the shifting, swirling pattern where the tide pushes sand and turquoise water together, best seen from the Hill Inlet Lookout or by seaplane.

Where to stay

InterContinental Hayman Great Barrier Reef has the whole of Hayman Island to itself and remains the benchmark the rest of the archipelago is measured against. It reopened on 1 July 2019 after Cyclone Debbie closed the island in 2017, following an AU$135 million rebuild by owner Mulpha Australia, and, decisively, under a different operator and name, ending its long run as One&Only Hayman Island. There are 166 rooms, suites and villas across three wings, five restaurants and bars, and a spa working with the Australian brand Sodashi. It took its present title only in November 2024, worth knowing when reading older reviews.

Elysian Retreat is the opposite end of the scale: ten oceanfront villas on a three-hectare private cove at the southern tip of Long Island, adults only, capped at twenty guests, all-inclusive and run off the grid on solar power. It opened in April 2019 and holds Australia's highest ecotourism certification. Nothing is within walking distance, which is the point rather than a drawback.

Heart Hotel and Gallery Whitsundays is the mainland option, open since November 2016 on Shute Harbour Road beside the Airlie Beach lagoon. Designed by north Queensland practice Hunt Design Architects around the pitched roofs and verandahs of the classic Queenslander house, its 40 rooms sit below a top-floor gallery running monthly shows by local artists. Staying here means waking on the coast rather than on the reef, with the marinas a short walk away: materially cheaper than an island resort.

Le Méridien Lindeman Island Resort & Spa is the one to watch. Lindeman's Club Med closed in 2012 after Cyclone Yasi and the island has been dormant since; Singapore-based Well Smart Group bought it in 2023 and committed AU$583 million to a staged revitalisation, of which AU$60 million goes to this resort. It is due in September 2027 with 200 rooms and nine suites, operated by La Vie Hotels & Resorts, and will be Marriott's first resort in the archipelago. Two years out on a site that has already defeated one operator, the date is a plan rather than a certainty.

Why Daydream Island isn't listed here

Daydream Island Resort is often called a Whitsundays reopening, and physically it was: substantially rebuilt after Cyclone Debbie, it welcomed guests again in 2019. But it reopened under the same name, operator and identity it had before. This guide covers new hotels and treats a renovation, however extensive, as a different thing. The test is whether the public identity changed: Hayman qualifies because the operator, brand and name all did; Daydream does not, because none of them did.

Getting out on the water

Sailing is the default way to experience the Whitsundays: bareboat charters, skippered yachts and larger day-trip catamarans all operate out of Airlie Beach and Hamilton Island, typically combining a stop at Whitehaven Beach with snorkelling or diving on a nearby fringing reef such as Hardy Reef or Bait Reef. Because the islands sit inside the Great Barrier Reef itself rather than requiring a long boat trip out to it, reef access here is faster than from most mainland Queensland launch points.

Is a new hotel opening in the Whitsundays?

Yes. Le Méridien Lindeman Island Resort & Spa is due in September 2027, reviving a Club Med site empty since 2012 and bringing Marriott to the archipelago for the first time. Before that, InterContinental Hayman reopened under a new brand in July 2019 and Elysian Retreat opened on Long Island in April 2019.

Should I stay on an island or at Airlie Beach?

Airlie Beach is cheaper, has restaurants within walking distance and puts you at the departure point for every charter: Heart Hotel and Gallery Whitsundays is the option tracked there. An island resort costs more and adds a launch or helicopter transfer, but it is the only way to wake up inside the reef. Many visitors do both in one trip.

Why isn't Daydream Island included in this guide?

Because it reopened in 2019 under the same name and operator it had before, after a rebuild rather than as a new hotel. This guide counts an opening when the public identity of the property changes, which is why Hayman is listed and Daydream is not.
