Heart Hotel and Gallery Whitsundays

Heart Hotel and Gallery Whitsundays opened in November 2016 at 277 Shute Harbour Road, in the centre of Airlie Beach beside the town lagoon, as a purpose-built boutique hotel in a market dominated by hostels and apartment blocks. Designed by north Queensland practice Hunt Design Architects around the classic Queenslander vernacular, its 40 rooms sit beneath a top-floor art gallery running monthly exhibitions by Whitsunday artists. It works as a mainland base for sailing charters and island day trips rather than as a reef resort.

The place

The hotel stands at 277 Shute Harbour Road, in the centre of Airlie Beach and beside the town's swimming lagoon. Airlie Beach is on the mainland rather than on one of the 74 islands, and it is the practical gateway to the archipelago: the marinas from which the sailing charters, day boats and island transfers depart are a short walk or drive away. Guests staying here are choosing the departure point over the islands themselves — a materially cheaper way to see the Whitsundays, at the cost of waking up on the coast rather than on the reef.

The concept

Heart Hotel and Gallery opened in November 2016 as a purpose-built boutique hotel, at a time when Airlie Beach's accommodation ran largely to backpacker hostels, apartment blocks and older motels. The architecture is by the north Queensland practice Hunt Design Architects and draws explicitly on the classic Queenslander house: steeply pitched roofs, generous verandahs, timber cladding and detailing scaled to the tropics rather than imported from a generic resort catalogue. The hotel's distinguishing feature, and the source of its name, is on the top floor: a boutique art gallery that runs monthly exhibitions of work by Whitsunday artists, integrated into the building rather than hung as lobby decoration. The 40 rooms are specified above the local norm, with Bose sound systems, Nespresso machines, smart televisions, quality linen and furnished balconies, and the deluxe category faces the ocean. It remains one of the few Airlie Beach properties built from the outset as a design-led hotel rather than adapted into one.

Dining & wellness

The hotel has a restaurant and a bar on site, alongside the top-floor art gallery; no individual venue name is documented in the sources consulted here. No spa forms part of the property.
