The place

The hotel occupies a brand-new tower at 1439 Chestnut Street in Center City, developed jointly with the adjoining Element Philadelphia as part of a roughly $280 million dual-branded project.

The concept

After more than six years of development, W Philadelphia opened in August 2021 as the brand's first Philadelphia property, bringing W's playful, nightlife-driven formula (floor-to-ceiling city-view windows, a design language built around the brand's signature energy) into a purpose-built downtown tower. It's a straightforward new-construction addition to Center City's hotel stock rather than a historic conversion, aimed at travelers who want W's rooftop-scene positioning in a city that hadn't previously had one.

Dining & wellness

The rooftop WET Deck has a year-round heated pool, fire pits, a bar and cabanas that turn into a daytime and evening pool club in summer; ground-floor dining comes from Dolce Italian, a 1960s Rome-inspired restaurant, alongside AWAY Spa and the 24-hour FIT gym.

Room did not have cold water. Tap water was boiling hot on both sides. Shower temp could not be lowered. Every single amenity has a hidden fee. Bathroom has sliding door that offers zero privacy, or lock. The security at this place is second only to the pentagon. We were told that we could not access the observation deck due to "security reasons". If you want to swim, you must have a wristband. Why is a room key not enough? This place goes out of its way to inconvenience its guests, its absurd. Your keycard will only go to your floor; if you are traveling with someone on a different floor, have fun taking 32 flights of stairs to go visit them. 7th floor pool tile appears to have never even been cleaned before, was disgusting. The view was cool, I guess. Was offered a free cocktail upon arrival, and it was good. Won't be staying here again.

I'm unsure why there are negative Google reviews of the W Hotel in Philly. I was in town for the weekend for a wedding and our stay at the W was exceptional. I was hesitant about the room being dark, but the lighting had options to adjust the lighting, which was super cool. The room was clean, the hotel was clean, the staff were very nice and accommodating, the bars and pool were clean; basically, everything you would expect from the W brand. The hotel is also super close to some great restaurants, coffee shops, and markets. Great and moody room for couples.

I recently stayed at the W Philadelphia on Chestnut Street, and I have to say I was extremely disappointed, especially considering the price and the hotel’s five-star reputation. From the moment I arrived, the front desk service was unprofessional and unwelcoming. Unfortunately, things only got worse once I got to my room. The room was not clean—the couch was filthy, there were fingerprints all over the mirrors, and it was clear the room had not been properly inspected. I notified the front desk and was moved to another room, only to find the same issues. The mirrors were again covered in fingerprints, and there was trash, including paper, underneath the bed. At that point, it was obvious this wasn’t an isolated incident but a lack of attention to cleanliness throughout the hotel. The hotel offered a $100 breakfast credit, but I don’t feel that was an appropriate resolution. For what I paid and the level of service expected from a five-star hotel, I believe a partial refund would have been much more reasonable. I chose this hotel expecting luxury, cleanliness, and exceptional customer service. Instead, I left feeling disappointed and that the experience did not justify the price. I hope management takes these concerns seriously because guests paying premium rates deserve much better.

$750 Prepaid reservation. I arrived at 3:30 for a guaranteed 4pm check-in. “Guaranteed” turned out to mean nothing. No room, no timeline, no answers — just vague shrugs from a front desk that seemed as clueless as the guests. Three hours passed. Three. The lobby filled up with other paying customers stuck in the exact same limbo, all of us doing the math on how much of our Saturday this hotel was quietly stealing from us. Eventually I stopped waiting for a hotel that couldn’t tell me if it actually had a room, and asked for my money back. That part, at least, was easy — which almost makes it worse. They can process a refund in minutes but can’t turn over a room in three hours. Then came valet, where retrieving my own car turned into its own endurance test. By that point I wasn’t surprised. The dysfunction wasn’t isolated to one desk — it ran through the whole building. This is a “five-star” hotel that can’t handle Saturday check-ins without collapsing into chaos. Charge less or staff properly — right now you’re doing neither. Find literally anywhere else to stay.

Our stay didn’t get off to the best start—we had to wait about an hour in the lobby for our room—but the exceptional staff quickly turned things around. They upgraded our room, treated the kids to free hot chocolate, and even provided a $50 room service voucher, which was a very pleasant surprise. The room itself was stunning, with breathtaking views from the 48th floor and a stylish, moody aesthetic. Everything was spotless, and I had no concerns about cleanliness. Down in the lobby, the live music created a great atmosphere, and Andy at the bar was fantastic. I also explored the 7th-floor amenity level, which features a rooftop pool deck with a bar, a spa, and a well-equipped fitness center. The pool was impressively warm despite the cool, breezy weather, and the fitness center was clean and well maintained. Sleep quality was excellent, even though our room was directly across from the elevators—just a few minor disturbances late at night from people talking. In the morning, the lobby coffee bar was convenient and well stocked. Checkout was smooth, and the bell staff were friendly and helpful. Overall, we had a wonderful experience. I would absolutely stay here again and look forward to returning in the future. Thank you for a great stay!
