Braemar Hotels & Resorts spent 19 months and roughly $30 million converting the Courtyard San Francisco Downtown into The Clancy, an Autograph Collection boutique hotel that opened October 1, 2020 in San Francisco's SoMa district. The 410-room property swapped the Courtyard's standard design for street-art motifs and a taproom-style restaurant, aiming at San Francisco's upscale independent-hotel tier. Sixth Street acquired the hotel from Braemar for $115 million in November 2025; Marriott still operates it under the Autograph Collection flag.

The place

The Clancy sits at 299 Second Street in South of Market, on one of the ten original blocks that formed the city of San Francisco, within walking distance of the Moscone Center convention complex, Oracle Park, and SFMOMA. SoMa's mix of tech offices, galleries, and converted warehouses gives the district a rougher, more workaday character than Union Square a few blocks north, and the hotel's design leans into that rather than smoothing it over.

The concept

The Clancy did not open as a new building — it is a complete reflagging of the former Courtyard San Francisco Downtown, a Marriott select-service hotel that had operated on the site for years. Then-owner Braemar Hotels & Resorts spent roughly $30 million over 19 months stripping the property down and rebuilding it as an Autograph Collection boutique hotel, with AXIS/GFA Architecture handling the building and EDG the interiors. The result trades the Courtyard's standard corporate register for a design built around San Francisco street culture: Muni streetcar track lines run through the lobby floor, and a wall assembled from recycled spray-paint cans by local artist Ian Ross anchors one of the public spaces. Guest rooms pair oversized white headboards with black-and-white abstract rugs and rotating local artwork. Braemar sold the hotel in November 2025 to Sixth Street, in partnership with Riller Capital, for $115 million; Marriott continues to operate the property under the Autograph Collection flag.

Dining & wellness

Seven Square Taproom is the hotel's restaurant, run by chef Dawn Taylor-Cole with comfort food such as dry-rub mango jerk wings and mojo-marinated steak frites, backed by ten local beers on tap and cocktails including a smoked maple old fashioned. Radiator Coffee Salon covers mornings off the lobby with Equator Coffee and pastries from Craftsman and Wolves. A two-sided lobby bar splits craft cocktails from a beer-focused, restaurant-side pour, and Block 9, an enclosed courtyard with communal fire pits, gives the hotel an outdoor gathering space uncommon for a downtown San Francisco property. Meeting space totals more than 11,000 square feet across 16 rooms, including the 200-guest Rincon Hill venue — a legacy of the building's convention-hotel footprint.
