Hotel Castro opened in the Castro district of San Francisco in December 2021, a brand-new four-story, 12-room building replacing a demolished 19th-century structure on 18th Street. It is run by Kasa Living under a tech-enabled, low-staff model — self check-in, no front desk, remote guest support — rather than as a conventionally staffed boutique hotel.

The place

Hotel Castro sits on 18th Street in the Castro, San Francisco's historic LGBTQ+ neighborhood, a few steps from the intersection with Castro Street and its rainbow crosswalks, bars and independent shops. The location is entirely walkable, with no on-site parking, within a short stroll of Dolores Park and the Castro Muni station.

The concept

Hotel Castro is not a converted storefront: the two-story building that previously stood at 4230 18th Street, most recently home to a sandwich shop, was demolished in 2019 after Planning Commission approval in 2018. In its place, developer Gannon Tidwell of Postcard Properties built a new four-story, 12-room structure from the ground up, designed by Cass Calder Smith Architecture, with a rooftop deck and private balconies on some rooms. Inside, each of the 12 compact rooms carries a mural honoring a historic LGBTQ+ figure, paired with a retro-1970s palette that nods to the neighborhood's history. The hotel is operated by Kasa Living under a tech-enabled, low-staff model rather than as a traditionally staffed boutique property: there is no manned front desk, check-in is self-service via a mobile app, and guest requests are handled remotely by a virtual guest-experience team.

Dining & wellness

The ground floor houses a bar that operates independently of Kasa's hotel operations rather than as an in-house hotel restaurant. Beyond that, Hotel Castro has no dedicated restaurant of its own; guests rely on the surrounding Castro's dense restaurant and bar scene for meals.
