LUMA Hotel San Francisco

LUMA Hotel San Francisco opened in July 2022 as the first hotel ever built in Mission Bay and the city's first ground-up hotel in over a decade. The 299-room, 22-story tower was named Tripadvisor's Best New Hotel in the U.S. for 2023.

The place

LUMA sits at 100 Channel Street in Mission Bay, the biotech and sports district that has grown up around Oracle Park and the Chase Center on San Francisco's southeastern waterfront. The 22-story tower was the first hotel built in the neighborhood and the first ground-up hotel to open in San Francisco proper in more than ten years.

The concept

Developed and owned by Stanford Hotels Corporation, LUMA was conceived as a community-facing lifestyle property rather than a conventional convention hotel, with a ground-floor living room, a coffee bar and a marketplace designed to double as neighborhood gathering spots. The 299 rooms lean into natural light, smart-room technology and recyclable flooring, while the building's rainwater-harvesting system and motion-sensor lighting earned it LEED Silver certification. Tripadvisor named LUMA the Best New Hotel in the United States for 2023.

Dining & wellness

Dining runs from Twyne, a ground-floor coffeehouse, to Trevino, a wine bar, and Cavana, the hotel's rooftop restaurant and bar on the 17th floor serving Latin American-inflected food and cocktails with skyline and bay views. A 7,250-square-foot event space and a fitness center round out the amenities; the hotel has no spa or pool.
