1 Hotel San Francisco

In June 2022, Pebblebrook Hotel Trust and operator SH Hotels & Resorts reopened the former Hotel Vitale on San Francisco's Embarcadero as 1 Hotel San Francisco, the brand's first Bay Area property. The $25 million redevelopment kept the waterfront building but replaced its identity, restaurant and interiors, landing 200 rooms and suites, a new restaurant (Terrene), and a nature-driven, LEED Gold-certified design overseen by NICOLEHOLLIS.

The place

The hotel sits at 8 Mission Street on the Embarcadero, directly across from the San Francisco Ferry Building and facing the bay toward the Bay Bridge. The waterfront position places guests on the promenade linking downtown's Financial District to the piers, away from the density of Union Square but close enough to reach it on foot or by streetcar.

The concept

1 Hotel San Francisco occupies the building that operated as Hotel Vitale from 2005 until Pebblebrook Hotel Trust, which had owned the property since 2018, closed it for a $25 million redevelopment and reopened it under SH Hotels & Resorts' 1 Hotels brand — a change of identity and operator, not a refurbishment under the old name. It is the brand's first Bay Area property. NICOLEHOLLIS handled the interior architecture and design, working with reclaimed barn and industrial lumber for the lobby floor and redwood salvaged from the old Bay Bridge in the corridors, alongside native greenery and organic textures consistent with 1 Hotels' recurring nature-driven aesthetic. The hotel is LEED Gold certified and pairs its environmental positioning with a straightforwardly upscale program.

Dining & wellness

Terrene, the hotel's restaurant and bar, replaced Americano and serves a Latin American and Mexican-inspired, produce-driven menu — including ingredients from the hotel's rooftop garden and on-site beehives — with a bar list built around zero-waste, agave-focused cocktails and biodynamic wines; the patio opens directly onto the Embarcadero waterfront with Bay Bridge views. Wellness runs through the Bamford Wellness Spa, with treatment rooms and a terrace fitted with cast-stone soaking tubs.
