The Standard Melbourne (Fitzroy)

Standard International brought its rebellious lifestyle-hotel playbook to Australia for the first time in August 2024, opening The StandardX Melbourne on Fitzroy's Rose Street after a rocky, multi-year path to launch. The 125-room property is the debut of StandardX, a younger, more accessible sibling brand to the flagship Standard hotels of New York, Miami and London, built around Fitzroy's post-punk, artist-scene identity rather than imported glamour. A fire-engine-red revolving door and interiors by local firm Hecker Guthrie set the tone for a hotel that trades party-hotel bravado for something scruffier and more neighbourhood-rooted.

The place

The hotel sits at 62 Rose Street in Fitzroy, just off Brunswick Street and north of Melbourne's CBD, in a pocket of the inner city built more around terrace houses, independent galleries and record stores than tourist infrastructure. Fitzroy has long been Melbourne's reference point for bohemian and countercultural identity, from its 1980s "Little Bands" post-punk scene — associated with figures like Nick Cave and Rowland S. Howard — to its present-day concentration of independent bars and studios. Placing a global hotel brand here was contentious enough locally that the project drew opposition, including from a long-running Fitzroy pub that already traded under the Standard name, contributing to delays before the hotel finally opened.

The concept

The StandardX Melbourne is Standard International's first Australian property and the launch site for StandardX, a spin-off positioned as a more affordable, less overtly party-driven version of the group's flagship Standard hotels. Architecture is by Woods Bagot, with interiors by Melbourne-based Hecker Guthrie, who fitted the eight-storey building with polished terrazzo floors, caramel leather couches, custom furniture from Danish brand Hay and artwork by local artist Jane Sinclair. The 125 rooms span seven configurations, from 21-square-metre Cozy Kings up to 48-square-metre Suite Spot rooms, finished with built-in beds, Egyptian cotton sheets and small design touches — Smeg kettles, a Frank Green French press — aimed at a guest who wants boutique detail without five-star pricing. The project had a longer runway than most: first announced in 2021 and originally slated to open in February 2024, the hotel's launch slipped roughly five months amid noise complaints from neighbours and pushback tied to the existing Standard Hotel pub in Fitzroy, before it finally opened in August 2024. The design leans explicitly on the suburb's post-punk and "Little Bands" heritage rather than a generic international lifestyle template, and the hotel is dog-friendly, reinforcing a neighbourhood-first positioning over a destination-resort one. In June 2025, the property was given a Style and Design Award in La Liste's global hotel rankings, which singled it out as the only Australian hotel to receive special recognition that year, describing it as "arty, bold and unfiltered."

Dining & wellness

Food and drink centre on Bang, an all-day Thai street-food-inspired diner helmed by executive chef Justin Dingle-Garciyya, whose background includes stints at Sofitel Adelaide, W Hotels, Aman and Six Senses. The Roof, an exclusive rooftop bar reserved for hotel guests, serves cocktails alongside a menu drawing on Mexico City's Mercado Medellin — tacos and ceviche — with panoramic views over the city. A ground-floor retail space called The Box rounds out the offer with grab-and-go snacks, drinks and merchandise. There is no indication of a spa or pool at the property.
