The place

The hotel sits at 701 Swanston Street, Carlton, on the CBD fringe, overlooking Lincoln Square — a small, tree-lined park framed by Moreton Bay fig trees. Carlton has been one of Melbourne's dining and café strips since the 1950s (long associated with the city's Italian community and Lygon Street's restaurant scene), but had no internationally flagged hotel until this opening, leaving the suburb reliant on Melbourne's CBD hotel stock a short tram ride away.

The concept

Crowne Plaza Melbourne Carlton is a new-build hotel developed by IHG in partnership with Pelligra Group, pitched explicitly as Carlton's introduction to branded, business-grade hospitality rather than a boutique play. The 107-room property leans into its immediate surroundings: a facade described by IHG as inspired by Carlton's tree-lined avenues, a timber-lined lobby built around a sculptural bronze installation, and guest rooms finished in green and timber tones echoing the parkland outside. Original artworks throughout the hotel offer geometric interpretations of Carlton's streets and pedestrian life, reinforcing a design brief tied tightly to neighborhood identity rather than a generic corporate template. With more than 270 square metres of flexible meeting and event space across four adaptable rooms, a pre-function area and a ground-floor working lounge, the hotel is positioned primarily for corporate and small-to-mid-sized event business, supplementing Melbourne's existing convention-hotel stock with an option outside the CBD core. Its billing as Carlton's 'first internationally branded hotel' is the property's clearest point of differentiation — it is testing whether an established suburb with strong dining credentials but no branded lodging can support one.

Dining & wellness

The hotel's signature restaurant and bar, Fico Carlton, is named for the Moreton Bay fig trees framing Lincoln Square and serves Italian share-style dining under executive chef Patrick Chung, with menu highlights including handmade pasta, slow-cooked beef cheek, fire-cooked barramundi and a tableside sgroppino (lemon gelato, prosecco and limoncello) service in the evenings. The hotel also includes a fully equipped gym; no spa or pool has been reported.
