The Ritz-Carlton opened in Melbourne on March 23, 2023, claiming the upper floors of an 80-story tower on Lonsdale Street and, with them, the title of Australia's tallest hotel. It is Marriott's second Ritz-Carlton in the country after Perth, and the first anywhere to put its entire 257-room count above the 64th floor.

The place

The hotel sits at 650 Lonsdale Street on the western edge of Melbourne's central business district, inside West Side Place, a mixed-use precinct combining the hotel tower with residential apartments. The location places it within walking distance of Southern Cross Station, the Docklands waterfront and the CBD's retail and theatre core, while the tower itself — the tallest hotel building in the country — sits apart from the traditional Collins Street luxury cluster to the east. Guests reach the hotel through a ground-floor arrival before rising more than sixty stories to a sky lobby that reorients the property around its views rather than its street frontage.

The concept

The hotel occupies levels 65 to 80 of an 80-story tower, designed by Australian architecture firm Cottee Parker with interiors by BAR Studio. Its 257 rooms and suites begin on level 65, meaning every guest room sits above the height of most freestanding buildings in the city, with floor-to-ceiling windows opening onto Port Phillip Bay, the Dandenong Ranges and the Melbourne skyline. The Sky Lobby reception on level 80 is built around a double-vaulted ceiling, and the interiors draw on Melbourne's cultural identity and art scene, incorporating curated Australian artwork alongside European heritage references and materials such as marble and custom leather and velvet furniture. The opening marked Marriott's second Ritz-Carlton address in Australia, following the brand's return to the country in Perth in 2019, and it positioned the property as a vertical counterpoint to that harborside hotel — a design built entirely around altitude rather than waterfront proximity. Melbourne Convention Bureau and Australian trade press covered the debut as a landmark addition to the city's hotel landscape, and the hotel went on to be named the top-ranked hotel in Australia and New Zealand in Condé Nast Traveler's 2024 Readers' Choice Awards.

Dining & wellness

Atria, the signature restaurant on level 80, serves Modern Australian cuisine under executive chef Michael Greenlaw, with Sydney chef Mark Best advising on the culinary program; the kitchen emphasizes local seafood and seasonal produce. Cameo, the adjoining cocktail bar, focuses on rare spirits and vintage pours, including a Manhattan made with century-old rye. The Ritz-Carlton Lobby Lounge covers coffee, casual dining and afternoon tea with panoramic views. The spa occupies level 64 with six treatment rooms using ESPA products, alongside a heated indoor infinity pool and fitness center.
