The place
The Bellwether sits at 1300 Bardstown Road in the Highlands, occupying the former Highlands police station building along with an adjoining 1917 BellSouth telephone switching station.
The concept
Developers bought the former police station and switching-station buildings in 2019 and converted them into a 20-room, apartment-style "neighborhood hotel" that began taking reservations in October 2021. Rather than a staffed front desk, The Bellwether runs on a self-check-in model, with suites ranging from studios to a four-bedroom, two-bath unit with a full kitchen. The conversion kept the original police station facade and WWII-era murals, and turned a former ballet studio on the site (once home to the Louisville Ballet) into a lounge, giving the property a layered, three-building history rather than a single clean adaptive-reuse story.
Dining & wellness
Dining is handled through M. Peppers, a modern French restaurant operating alongside the hotel; The Bellwether itself does not run a traditional in-house restaurant or spa.
