The Industrialist Hotel, Autograph Collection

Housed in the once-vacant Arrott Building on Wood Street, The Industrialist turned a 1902 Beaux Arts office tower into downtown Pittsburgh's first Autograph Collection hotel when it opened in May 2021. Its 124 rooms and the ground-floor Rebel Room restaurant lean into the city's manufacturing history without pretending to be anything but a mid-sized boutique hotel.

The place

The hotel occupies the Arrott Building, a 1902 Beaux Arts high-rise at 405 Wood Street in the Golden Triangle, Pittsburgh's downtown core, a short walk from Market Square and PPG Place.

The concept

HRI Properties bought the long-vacant Arrott Building — built for bathtub magnate James Arrott and designed by architect Frederick Osterling — and turned it into the first hotel the building has ever housed. It opened May 4, 2021, under Marriott's Autograph Collection banner, with interiors by Stonehill Taylor and restoration work by Desmone Architects. The name and styling lean hard into Pittsburgh's manufacturing history: guest rooms take a monochromatic, machine-inspired palette with distressed oak floors and brass fixtures, while public spaces keep the original Italian marble, mosaic tile and crown molding, paired with metal sculptural chandeliers meant to evoke factory equipment. At 124 rooms and suites, including a Presidential Suite, it reads as a boutique counterpart to Pittsburgh's larger convention-oriented hotels — a downtown address built around the building's landmark status rather than around meeting-room square footage, even though it does carry roughly 1,200 square feet of small meeting space (The Exchange Room and The Founders boardroom/library).

Dining & wellness

The ground-floor restaurant, The Rebel Room, serves elevated American fare — bananas foster French toast at breakfast, crispy crab cakes and similar plates at dinner — alongside craft cocktails and local beers. The second-floor Industrialist Lounge doubles as a bar and a maker space, running a rotating "Makers Menu" of local-artisan activities (leather work, candle making) instead of a conventional spa; there is a small fitness center but no spa on site.
