Placemakr Downtown Pittsburgh at The Pennsylvanian

Placemakr opened a furnished, apartment-style hospitality wing inside The Pennsylvanian, the former Pennsylvania Railroad station designed by Daniel Burnham in downtown Pittsburgh. Short stays began in the second quarter of 2025, alongside the building's residential leases, which bring the total to roughly 240 units.

The place

The address is 1100 Liberty Avenue, in the Cultural District, with a direct connection to the Amtrak station and the David L. Lawrence Convention Center close by.

The concept

The Pennsylvanian is Burnham's Beaux-Arts former Pennsylvania Railroad station, built between 1898 and 1904 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Its rotunda and office block were converted into 241 apartments in 1988, long after the main hall stopped serving intercity passengers. Amtrak still calls at a small depot to the rear.

Placemakr, a Washington-based operator of furnished stays, added a hospitality wing next to the unfurnished residential leases. Acram Group of New York manages the property. Furnished units are sold as Placemakr Downtown Pittsburgh, the others as The Pennsylvanian.

The mix runs from studio to two bedrooms. The studio measures 525 sq ft with a queen bed and full kitchen, for two guests. One-bedrooms run from 680 to 735 sq ft and sleep four with a sofa bed; the Premium version reaches 955 sq ft and adds a workspace. An accessible one-bedroom with an accessible tub covers 775 sq ft. The two-bedroom, at 1,035 to 1,040 sq ft, has two queen beds, two bathrooms and sleeps six.

Every unit has a washer and dryer. How many of the 240 units belong to the hospitality side has not been published.

Dining & wellness

No restaurant has been announced for the hospitality wing, so the in-unit kitchens do the work. Placemakr also runs The Grand Hall, the building's event space, popular for weddings, and the lobby has lounge seating and vending machines.

The fitness center is open around the clock. Valet parking costs $40 a night with in-and-out privileges and has to be reserved ahead with the property.
