Hotel X opened in Fortitude Valley on February 22, 2021, as Queensland developer Pointcorp's independently branded answer to a boutique-lifestyle gap in Brisbane's nightlife district. Eight months later it became the launch property of IHG's new Vignette Collection, the group's first fully independent-feeling Luxury & Lifestyle brand. In July 2026, the 146-room hotel was relaunched under a new name, The Alva Hotel Brisbane, still within Vignette Collection.

The place

The hotel sits at 458 Brunswick Street in Fortitude Valley, Brisbane's traditional live-music and nightlife precinct, a short walk from the Valley's bar strip, the Chinatown mall and the New Farm and Valley train stations. Pointcorp built the 146-room property as a standalone tower rather than converting an existing structure, giving it a purpose-built white geometric facade with custom lighting designed to stand out after dark. The Valley location was a deliberate choice: the developer pitched the hotel's 24-hour restaurant and bar operation as a contribution to the neighborhood's nightlife economy rather than a quiet retreat from it.

The concept

Hotel X was originally planned as a Hotel Indigo before Pointcorp and IHG repositioned it as an independently branded property to reach for a more design-led, higher-energy identity than the Indigo template allowed. It opened in February 2021 with 146 rooms and suites across categories ranging from standard kings to corner terrace suites, rooms fitted with Dyson and GHD appliances and, in premium categories, Karl Lagerfeld bathroom amenities — one of the fashion house's first tie-ins with a hotel brand. Guest rooms carry artwork by Justin Nicholas, and public spaces lean on the same ultra-chic, nightlife-adjacent aesthetic as the facade. In August 2021, IHG named Hotel X the flagship launch property of Vignette Collection, its newly announced Luxury & Lifestyle brand built around fully individual, non-templated hotels; the Brisbane opening in December 2021 made it the brand's first hotel worldwide and the first Vignette property in Australia. That arrangement held for roughly five years. In July 2026, IHG relaunched the property as The Alva Hotel Brisbane, still within Vignette Collection, with a redesigned lobby, refreshed guest rooms featuring local artwork, Grown Alchemist amenities and a music-focused "Sounds of Alva" program — a full repositioning rather than a signage change, retaining the same building, room count and Fortitude Valley address.

Dining & wellness

At opening, Hotel X operated two venues from the team behind Brisbane restaurants Donna Chang and Blackbird Bar & Grill: Bisou Bisou, a French-inspired bistro and bar on the ground floor, and Iris, a Mediterranean rooftop bar and restaurant beside the pool. Both venues carried over into the Vignette Collection era and, as of the July 2026 rebrand to The Alva Hotel, continue operating under Brisbane hospitality group Ghanem Group, with Iris now positioned with Spanish-inspired dishes alongside its rooftop pool setting.
