The place
Montfort Hall, an Italianate mansion completed around 1860, sits in the Boylan Heights neighborhood just southwest of downtown Raleigh — a residential setting rather than a hotel district.
The concept
Sarah and Jim Shepherd bought the roughly 10,000-square-foot mansion in 2018 and spent several years restoring it — 15-foot ceilings, original hardwood floors, ten fireplaces, a library and a parlor kept intact — before opening it as Heights House Hotel in May 2021, the first time the building has ever operated as a hotel. Interior designer Brian Costello handled the styling, blending the house's vintage bones with contemporary furnishings across nine en-suite guest rooms that can sleep up to 20 guests total.
Dining & wellness
The Parlor, the hotel's in-house dining room, serves a European-style breakfast, a Sunday Sauce dinner and afternoon tea service to guests.
