The Godfrey Detroit opened in August 2023 as a brand-new seven-story hotel in Corktown, marking the Godfrey Hotels boutique brand's second property after Chicago. Its industrial-inspired architecture and retractable-roof rooftop lounge have made it one of the anchors of Corktown's ongoing revival alongside Ford's Michigan Central campus.

The place

The Godfrey sits at 1401 Michigan Avenue in Corktown, Detroit's oldest neighborhood, a few blocks from the former Michigan Central Station now anchoring Ford's Corktown campus.

The concept

Opened in August 2023 in an entirely new seven-story building, The Godfrey is the second property of the Godfrey Hotels boutique collection (after Chicago) and the first Curio Collection by Hilton hotel in Detroit. The architecture nods to Albert Kahn's industrial factory buildings, with a dark metal-and-brick facade and a symmetrical window grid reinterpreted for a contemporary hotel, while The Gettys Group's interiors lean on black, white and wood tones tied to the city's manufacturing history. The project, co-developed by Chicago's Oxford Capital Group and Farmington Hills-based Hunter Pasteur Homes, was built as new construction rather than a conversion, adding a genuinely new hotel building to a neighborhood better known until recently for its historic rowhouses and Michigan Central redevelopment.

Dining & wellness

Ground-floor restaurant Hamilton's, two bars, a fitness center, a grand ballroom and four meeting spaces, plus the signature I|O Godfrey rooftop lounge with a retractable glass ceiling for year-round use.
