The Bedford Hotel Belfast
Belfast's grandest office block finally becomes the city's newest luxury address.
Open · May 2026
Belfast's 1904 Scottish Mutual Building, long empty after a failed earlier hotel scheme, has reopened as The Bedford Hotel — an 82-room independent luxury boutique opposite City Hall, with a restaurant led by chef Noel McMeel and design details drawn from the building's insurance-industry past.

The place
The hotel occupies the Grade B1-listed Scottish Mutual Building on Donegall Square South, directly opposite Belfast City Hall — a red Ballochmyle sandstone landmark built in 1904 as the headquarters of Scottish Mutual Assurance.
The concept
After an earlier, unrelated hotel scheme for the building fell through, an 18-month restoration converted the former insurance-company headquarters into an 82-room independent luxury boutique hotel, opening to bookings from 1 May 2026. The project kept as much of the original fabric as possible — ornate stonework, tiled walls, and the building's original steel vault doors, which have been repurposed as design features including entries to in-room minibar spaces. The interiors pair that Scottish Baronial and Edwardian shell with contemporary luxury detailing: emerald-toned guestrooms, Smart TVs, Lavazza machines and rainfall showers, alongside artwork celebrating Belfast figures like physicist Lord Kelvin and aviation pioneer Lilian Bland, plus motifs referencing the city's linen-weaving history.
Dining & wellness
The signature restaurant, The Nineteen Hundred, is led by Northern Ireland chef Noel McMeel and named for the building's era, with an adjoining all-day café bar. The Ledger Library serves as a private event space. No spa or wellness facility had been confirmed as of early 2026.
