Downtown Cleveland's first AC Hotel by Marriott is taking shape inside the New England Building, an 1896 tower reclad as a neoclassical bank building in 1915. The 141-room hotel, a Holiday Inn Express for 26 years, closed in January 2026 for an 18-month conversion backed by a $7 million Port of Cleveland financing package, with a reopening expected in mid-to-late 2027.

The place
The New England Building, a 17-story tower at 629 Euclid Avenue, on Cleveland's historic Euclid Avenue business corridor, a short walk from Public Square and Playhouse Square.
The concept
Built in 1896 as Cleveland's tallest building, the New England Building was reclad in a neoclassical, bank-like facade with Corinthian columns by Walker & Weeks after Guardian Savings and Trust Company bought it in 1915 — giving it its later names, the Guardian Building and then the National City Bank Building. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000, it today combines offices, residential lofts and, at street level, the independently run Marble Room Steak and Raw Bar. After 26 years as a Holiday Inn Express, the hotel closed in January 2026 for an 18-month, roughly $43 million conversion into downtown Cleveland's first AC Hotel by Marriott, an operator switch from IHG to Marriott. Developer 629 Euclid Hotel II LLC — pairing Cleveland's MRN Ltd. with Moment Development and Mira Development — secured a $7 million Port of Cleveland PACE bond in April 2026 to help close the financing.
Dining & wellness
Beyond a contemporary-meets-classical lobby designed by SA Group and Luminaut, no dining, bar or wellness amenities have been announced yet; Marble Room Steak and Raw Bar, unaffected by the renovation, continues to operate independently at street level.
