New hotels in Harlem

Harlem sits north of Central Park, with its own hotel and restaurant scene built around jazz history, the Apollo Theater and generally lower rates than anywhere south of 96th Street. The George Manhattan, Tapestry Collection by Hilton, opened here as new construction on the corner of West 126th Street and Morningside Avenue, within walking distance of Columbia University, the Apollo and Morningside Park.

For a weekend

See the Apollo Theater on 125th Street, Harlem's main commercial spine, and catch its Wednesday Amateur Night if the schedule allows — it's one of the longest-running live shows in the city. Walk south to Morningside Park for skyline views back toward Midtown, and spend an evening at one of the neighborhood's jazz clubs, a direct through-line to Harlem's musical history.

For a longer stay

With more time, the Studio Museum in Harlem covers African American art and Harlem's own cultural history in depth, and a walk through Marcus Garvey Park and the surrounding brownstone blocks shows the neighborhood's residential side away from 125th Street's commercial strip. Columbia University's campus, just south in Morningside Heights, is open for casual walking and worth pairing with a Harlem stay.
