The city's big-ticket accommodation news of the last few years has been about developments announced, approved, delayed or stalled rather than ribbon-cuttings: a landmark Hotel Indigo tower at the Island Quarter that has planning consent but no confirmed opening date, and a Guildhall conversion that has been paused by a heritage dispute. We track this page closely and will add a hotel here the moment one clears our verification bar.

What to do

A weekend in Nottingham

Start at Nottingham Castle, rebuilt behind its 17th-century ducal facade and reopened as a museum telling the Robin Hood story properly, then walk down into the Lace Market to see the Victorian warehouses that once supplied lace to the world. Duck into Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem, one of England's oldest pubs, carved into the sandstone rock beneath the castle, before an evening in Hockley's independent bars and restaurants. On day two, browse the Sunday stalls at Sneinton Market, take in contemporary art at Nottingham Contemporary, and finish with a canal-side walk through the Island Quarter, the derelict brewery site now being rebuilt into restaurants, event space and homes.

A full week

With more time, add a half-day at Wollaton Hall, the Elizabethan mansion and deer park used as Wayne Manor in Hollywood films, and a full day trip out to Sherwood Forest to walk among ancient oaks including the Major Oak. Sports fans can catch a match at the City Ground (Nottingham Forest) or a fixture at Trent Bridge, one of England's historic Test cricket grounds. The National Justice Museum, housed in a former courthouse and gaol, and the Malt Cross music hall are worth an afternoon each, and Nottingham's status as a UNESCO City of Literature (home to Lord Byron and D.H. Lawrence connections) makes its independent bookshops and literary trails a good rainy-day fallback.

Neighborhoods

City Centre / Old Market Square

The commercial heart of Nottingham, anchored by one of the largest market squares in England and the Council House's domed landmark. This is where the city's established hotel brands cluster, but we have no tracked hotel here yet — nothing opened in this area since 2020 has cleared our new-build-or-first-time-conversion and verification criteria.

Lace Market

The historic warehouse district that once handled a large share of the world's lace trade, now a conservation area of red-brick Victorian buildings turned into bars, galleries and offices. It's an obvious candidate for a future boutique conversion, but we have no tracked hotel here at present.

Hockley

Nottingham's creative quarter, dense with independent restaurants, vintage shops and nightlife around Broad Street and Heathcoat Street. No tracked hotel is currently located in Hockley.

The Park Estate

A private, gated Victorian and Regency conservation area just west of the castle, known for its grand villas and quiet, leafy streets. It has no hotel presence in our tracker — it remains almost entirely residential.

Sneinton Market

A once-industrial market quarter east of the city centre, now a hub for artists' studios, street food and weekend markets, sitting right next to the Island Quarter redevelopment. We have no tracked hotel here yet, though it is the neighborhood to watch: it directly borders the site where IHG has an agreement to bring Hotel Indigo and Staybridge Suites, a project with planning consent but, as of writing, no confirmed opening date.

West Bridgford

Technically a separate suburb across the River Trent, West Bridgford is where Trent Bridge cricket ground and the City Ground sit, and it has a well-regarded high street of its own. No tracked hotel is located here.

Island Quarter / Canal Quarter

The city's biggest regeneration site, a former brewery and industrial waterfront being redeveloped into restaurants, homes, office space and — per a 2021 agreement with IHG — a dual-branded Hotel Indigo and Staybridge Suites tower. Restaurants and event space at "1 The Island Quarter" and new student housing have opened here since 2022, but the hotel element itself has not broken ground on a confirmed timeline as far as we can verify, so it is not yet in our tracked list.

Business travelers

Until a tracked hotel appears, business travelers are best served by staying close to Nottingham railway station and the City Centre, both within easy reach of the office districts and a short taxi from Nottingham Business Park.

Weekend culture-seekers

Base yourself near the Lace Market or Hockley to be within walking distance of Nottingham Castle, Nottingham Contemporary and the city's independent bar and restaurant scene — this is the part of town most likely to see a boutique conversion land next.

Sports fans

If your trip centers on Nottingham Forest or Trent Bridge cricket, look toward West Bridgford, which sits across the river from both grounds and has its own restaurant strip for pre- and post-match food.

Families

Wollaton Hall's deer park and Sherwood Forest are the two big family draws, both easiest to reach with your own transport from a City Centre or West Bridgford base.

Travelers curious about the Island Quarter

If you want a front-row seat to Nottingham's biggest redevelopment as it happens, the Sneinton Market and canal-side area is worth watching — it's where the city's only announced upscale hotel project, IHG's Hotel Indigo and Staybridge Suites, is due to eventually rise, though we won't add it here until an opening date is confirmed.

In 2021, IHG announced an agreement with developer Conygar to bring Hotel Indigo (155 rooms) and Staybridge Suites (68 suites) to an 18-storey tower at the Island Quarter, and the scheme received planning approval in 2022. We have not been able to verify a confirmed opening date or confirmed construction start for the hotel building itself, so it is not yet included in our tracked list.

Is the Guildhall in Nottingham becoming a hotel?

A conversion of Nottingham's Grade II listed Guildhall into a hotel was granted planning approval in 2020, but the project stalled after an appeal over the heritage listing of part of the site was lodged in 2023, and contractors ceased work. It is not confirmed to be moving forward, so it does not appear on this page.
