The Exchange Sacramento turned a landmark 1914 office tower, once the tallest building west of the Mississippi, into a 100-room Curio Collection by Hilton hotel when it opened in September 2021. Original marble, terrazzo and carved ceilings survive intact behind a design narrative built around a fictional owning couple.
Set inside the 1914 California Fruit Building at 1006 4th Street in downtown Sacramento, once the tallest building west of the Mississippi and originally home to a fruit-growers' co-op and dozens of small offices.
The concept
The Exchange converts a Beaux-Arts/Renaissance Revival office tower, commissioned for the California Fruit Exchange in 1914, into a 100-room luxury boutique hotel under Hilton's Curio Collection. The restoration kept the building's marble staircase, terrazzo floors, hand-carved ceiling work and even its original mailbox, wrapping the historic shell in a design narrative built around a fictional owning couple, 'Mr. and Mrs. Exchange,' whose imagined travels inform the decor.
The result is one of downtown's more convincing heritage conversions: an office building that had gone underused for years, brought back as a hotel with its architectural detail intact rather than stripped and generic-ized.
Dining & wellness
Willow Restaurant & Bar, serving Southern Italian and Mediterranean-inspired food, opened on the ground floor in September 2022, about a year after the hotel itself. The property also has roughly 2,300 square feet of meeting space.
