The place

141 East Washington Street, in downtown Indianapolis's Wholesale District, close to the Indiana Convention Center, Gainbridge Fieldhouse and Monument Circle.

The concept

The 60,000-square-foot building was constructed in 1969 for State Life Insurance Co. in the Brutalist style, then used as law offices — it had never operated as a hotel before KennMar bought the 0.6-acre property in 2018. RATIO Architects led the roughly $35 million conversion into a 90-room boutique hotel, keeping the building's exposed concrete ceilings as a backdrop for a midcentury-modern interior of vivid color and layered texture rather than disguising the structure's origins.

Dining & wellness

The Hulman serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, and the rooftop Cannon Ball Lounge offers Indy-inspired food alongside cocktails, craft beer and coffee; an outdoor courtyard adds a full bar and fireplace.
