Aloft Indianapolis Downtown opened in February 2025 inside the restored 1898 Stock Yards Bank & Trust building on East Market Street, the Marriott lifestyle brand's first Indianapolis property. Everwood Hospitality Partners converted the 12-story tower into a 128-room hotel over roughly six years, keeping the original bank vault as a private lounge.

The place

136 East Market Street, in downtown Indianapolis's Wholesale District, a block off Monument Circle and within walking distance of the Indiana Convention Center and Circle Centre Mall.

The concept

The 12-story tower was built in 1898 to a design by Indiana architect Louis Henry Gibson and served over the decades as the Stock Yards Bank & Trust headquarters, then law offices and a law library, before sitting vacant. Everwood Hospitality Partners bought the building in 2018 for $5 million with plans for a hotel conversion first pegged at roughly $15 million; by the time the project wrapped, six years later, reporting on the completed renovation put the cost as high as $30 million, reflecting new structural steel and an added stair tower on the building's north face. It is a first-time hotel conversion, not a rebrand: the tower had never operated as a hotel before.

Dining & wellness

WXYZ Bar serves cocktails with weekly live music, Re:mix lounge offers games, and RE:FUEL covers quick bites and snacks. In a nod to the building's former tenant, the original bank vault off the lobby has been converted into a private lounge for small events and dining.

The hotel’s greatest strength is its location. It is within a few minutes’ walk of Whole Foods, restaurants and 15 minutes from the convention center, making it a convenient base for exploring downtown. The property appears to have undergone a recent renovation, and the interiors feel clean, modern, and well maintained. Most of the staff I encountered were friendly and professional, and complimentary coffee and milk are available in the mornings. Unfortunately, the soundproofing is among the weakest I have experienced within the Marriott portfolio. Street noise is constant throughout the day and night, including sirens, traffic, racing vehicles, and even conversations from the street below. Despite staying on a higher floor, outside noise remained very noticeable and significantly impacted sleep quality. Another drawback is that my room faced directly into windows across from the hotel, offering no views or privacy. Housekeeping is provided every other day, though a requested service was missed during my stay. In addition, the beds and pillows are exceptionally soft, which may not suit guests who prefer firmer support. Overall, while the location and renovated interiors are appealing, the noise levels and inconsistent housekeeping make the value proposition less compelling, especially given the number of hotel options available in the surrounding area.

Great new hotel right in the center of downtown. Beds were super comfortable, bathroom had a nice amount of counter space. A hidden surprise - steamer instead of an ironing board. Also had a nice Marshall branded Bluetooth speaker to connect to. Front desk staff were all nice and helpful. Gym was a little smaller than I would’ve liked, but no big deal.

Had a great stay at the Aloft! The location was perfect - there were so many places within walking distance, which made it easy to get around and explore downtown. The staff was friendly and welcoming from the moment I arrived. Special shoutout to Andrea for being so kind and having such a great personality. She made me feel right at home and was a big part of what made my stay so enjoyable. Would definitely stay here again!

Great location within walking distance of great food, coffee and entertainment. The staff is super friendly and were very accommodating to us and our kids. We spent some time at the bar and the service and cocktails were great. Check out the original bank vault in the back! The rooms were also great. My only complaint is the sliding bathroom door doesn’t close all the way. I would definitely stay again, though.

We chose this hotel because it is right in the heart of downtown within walking distance to many shops, restaurants, and tourist stops. We enjoyed our stay at Aloft Hotel because our room was clean, the gym was enjoyable, and we had fun grabbing a drink from the WYXZ bar in the lobby and playing a few games of pool. The bartender Hayden makes great drinks and was extremely kind and informative of last call. Also the hotel staff was friendly and responded quickly when we requested extra blankets, pillows, and towels to our room. We would definately recommend this hotel to our family and friends. Thank you Aloft.
