Canopy by Hilton San Antonio Riverwalk opened in April 2021 as the brand's first San Antonio property, a 195-room, 21-story tower built around the salvaged walls and cistern of the 1860s Alamo Fish Market. It brought a rare piece of serious adaptive-reuse architecture to a stretch of the River Walk otherwise dominated by convention hotels.

The place

The hotel sits directly on the River Walk at 123 N. Saint Mary's Street in downtown San Antonio, built around and above the remnants of the 1860s Alamo Fish Market building.

The concept

This was a genuinely new hotel operation: a 21-story tower designed by San Antonio firm Lake Flato with Gensler, built over and around the salvaged limestone walls and brick-vaulted cistern of the 19th-century Alamo Fish Market, which had never operated as a hotel. The tower cantilevers over its property lines on three sides to create a sheltered river-level plaza, and the reassembled historic cistern now anchors an outdoor dining courtyard — an unusually rigorous piece of adaptive-reuse architecture for a brand-standard Hilton product, which won a 2024 AIA San Antonio Place Award.

Dining & wellness

Domingo Restaurant serves South Texas-inflected cuisine (Mexican shrimp cocktail, halibut ceviche, wagyu options); Otro Bar, on the third floor, pairs river views with cocktails and tacos. The hotel also offers complimentary Canopy Bikes, a 24-hour fitness center, and pet-friendly rooms with welcome treats for dogs.
