Long Island City, one subway stop from Midtown, has a growing restaurant and gallery scene and a waterfront park with one of the best skyline views of Manhattan in the city. Flushing Meadows–Corona Park, further east, holds the Unisphere from the 1964 World's Fair and the USTA tennis center that hosts the US Open each September.

For a longer stay

With more time, Flushing's Chinatown is one of the city's largest and least touristy, worth a food-focused afternoon distinct from Manhattan's own Chinatown. Astoria, in the borough's north, has a dense Greek and Middle Eastern food scene and its own waterfront parks along the East River.
