The place

The hotel occupies the historic Stewart House Book Bindery on North West Thistle Street Lane, in the heart of Edinburgh's New Town — the area sometimes called the city's "golden rectangle" — surrounded by some of the neighborhood's best-regarded boutique restaurants.

The concept

Code Concepts, the Edinburgh operator best known for its capsule hostels, announced The Bindery in October 2025 as its first move into the boutique hotel segment. The 84-room property will occupy roughly 24,000 square feet of the former Stewart House Book Bindery, a building never previously used as a hotel, with a mix of double, twin and family rooms. Design studio a-nrd's interiors lean into a refined loft aesthetic — exposed original features, a mix of vintage and modern furniture, bespoke detailing and a nature-inspired palette drawn from the landscapes around Edinburgh — with subtle nods throughout to the building's bookbinding history. Sustainability features include an all-electric heating and cooling system, intelligent ventilation with heat recovery, a central building-management system and native planting in the rear garden. Construction is scheduled to begin on 20 October 2026, with an expected opening in the first quarter of 2027.

Dining & wellness

Ground-floor plans include a bar, a daily food menu, co-working space and flexible event areas, conceived as a shared hub open to both guests and local residents rather than a guests-only amenity.
