The place
209 N Stanton Street, in the heart of downtown El Paso, near San Jacinto Plaza, the Plaza Theatre and the Paso del Norte Bridge into Ciudad Juárez, Mexico — a genuinely walkable downtown and border-culture setting rather than a highway-adjacent hotel.
The concept
Businessman Miguel Fernandez bought the circa-1912 Rogers Furniture Building in 2011 and converted the four-story structure into a boutique hotel, replacing 80 tons of old concrete with structural steel and adding a fifth floor of suites. It opened in 2018 built around more than 100 curated artworks from Mexico, Europe and El Paso — including pieces by Damien Hirst and Robert Davidson alongside regional artists — centered on "Shylights," a moving light installation by Amsterdam's Studio Drift that runs down a four-story lightwell. The look deliberately avoids cliché Southwest hotel imagery in favor of a register the owner has compared to Mexico City's top luxury properties.
Dining & wellness
Taft-Díaz, named for the 1909 Taft-Díaz presidential summit held in El Paso, serves Mexican-influenced international cuisine for breakfast, lunch, dinner and weekend brunch under chef Oscar Herrera. Blush Boutique & Spa offers massages, facials, body treatments, a flotation tank, Vichy showers and steam rooms, alongside a 24-hour fitness studio, a rooftop patio overlooking downtown and Juárez, and a private speakeasy.
