Trost & Trost opened this El Paso landmark on Thanksgiving Day 1912; it reopened in October 2020 as an Autograph Collection hotel after a four-year restoration.
Hotel Paso del Norte, Autograph Collection, reopened on October 8, 2020, after closing in 2018 for a major restoration led by The Meyers Group. The 351-room hotel stands less than a mile north of the Mexican border in downtown El Paso, and the lobby keeps its stained-glass dome, more than 45 feet across.
The hotel stands in downtown El Paso, less than a mile from the border with Mexico. From the upper floors, guests see the Franklin Mountains, the Rio Grande and the Mexican side of the river.
During the 1914 Mexican Revolution, guests watched firefights between revolutionaries and the Mexican army from the roof terraces. That rooftop is now where the pool and bar sit.
The concept
El Paso businessman Zack T. White financed the building and J.E. Lewis built it. The architect was Henry Charles Trost, of Trost & Trost. After a fire destroyed another El Paso hotel, White and Trost studied how San Francisco buildings had survived the 1906 earthquake and fire. The result cost $1.5 million, in Chicago and Beaux-Arts styles, and opened on Thanksgiving Day 1912.
The lobby dome is in the Tiffany glass style, and more than 45 feet across. The National Register of Historic Places listed the hotel on January 5, 1979. Its guests have included seven US presidents, Pancho Villa and Amelia Earhart.
Ownership changed several times in the twentieth century. A 17-story north addition went up in 1986. Camino Real Hotels ran the property for about 30 years, until it sold to The Meyers Group in October 2016. Meyers, with local partner Two Sabes LLC, closed the hotel in 2018 and reopened it under Marriott's Autograph Collection. Jeffrey Meyers, co-chair of the group, took part in the redevelopment.
The hotel offers 33,000 square feet of meeting and event space. Sources give slightly different room counts, 351 or 356.
Dining & wellness
The 10th-floor rooftop has a pool, with a bar beside it. A cigar bar, a boutique and a fitness center complete the public areas. Desert Spirit Spa has a salt-therapy room. Restaurant names for the reopened hotel are not confirmed here.
