The concept Moxy is Marriott's compact, design-forward lifestyle brand aimed at younger, budget-conscious travelers who still want a design story, and the Portland property follows the formula closely: the lobby is built around Bar Moxy as a social hub, with communal work and lounge spaces, board games, and a deliberately playful tone rather than a conventional business-hotel lobby. Rooms trade square footage for personality — flip-down desks, large flat-screens with Chromecast, and compact but design-conscious layouts.
It's not chasing the luxury segment; it's chasing a specific downtown-nightlife-and-social-scene crowd, and that focus is consistent throughout the property.
Dining & wellness Sunrise Co covers breakfast sandwiches and locally made grab-and-go items, Moo Deng serves Thai street food, and Bar Moxy anchors the lobby with cocktails, wine, local beer, and small plates — the bar is explicitly the design centerpiece of the property, not an afterthought.
Our take It succeeds at what it sets out to do — a social, photogenic, reasonably priced lifestyle stay downtown — but reviewers have noted it's a better fit for the bar scene and Instagram than for a quiet night's sleep, which is the trade-off with this brand everywhere it operates.

I love, LOVE the staff. Ducan was a rock and an amazing entertainer. Made my friend April and I wanting more of his attention, even tho he was working. Even then he made sure we're taken care of.
The bar staff: hands down the best. I have NEVER taken photos of a bar staff with us, but it was necessary. Chris, Megan, and Conan deserve the love as they gave us the love back. We felt we were more than merely "customers", we were top tier. I don't have the money to be "top tier".
The rest of the staff were also amazing and truly made this a memorable experience. We're definitely coming back next year.
My stay at the Moxy hotel was quite interesting, to say the least. I'll start by saying that upon arrival, I was told that there was an early check in fee of $25, which ended up being refunded and I'll explain. The rooms are on the smaller side, so it was just enough for me, since I was traveling solo. The room came with basic standard amenities. The walls are also super thin so I could definitely hear other people next door while I was sleeping. As for the lobby, I loved the decor, and all the little fun details like the Photo Booth and other cozy seating areas. Please also be aware that the elevators don't have key card access, so literally anyone can go up to your floor, at any time.
Now here's where things get interesting. During my first night there, I went down to grab a drink at the bar, and unfortunately I had a really bad interaction with one rude male bartender working there. I ordered a Washington Apple, and had asked him to make it a double. He questioned me about it, in a very rude way, and made me feel bad about ordering. It almost felt discriminatory actually. I just didn't really appreciate how much of a scene he made about it. After I ordered my drink I ended up talking to two supervisors about this, (Duncan and Isabelle). They both took really great care of me throughout the remainder of my stay, and even refunded my early check in fee. Needless to say, this is a very cute hotel, and it's in the heart of downtown Portland, but as a black woman traveling solo, I don't think I'll be staying here again.
The staff was not friendly or welcoming.
There were very obvious fresh urine patches on our pull out sofa mattress. Seemed like housekeeping just covered it up with a bed sheet, disgusting.
When we called to notify the front desk they gave us a new room to sleep in, but did not apologize for the uncleanliness.
The person who was working the front desk at the time gave us the new room keys but spoke to us like we were inconveniencing them.
Bartender was rude.
The only positive thing I have to say about this place would be about their valet workers. Got our car to us quickly when it was requested & actually had manners. Every valet workers was very kind.
I would never recommend this hotel, nor will I stay in a Moxy hotel again.
The concept and vibe of this hotel was cool, but I am thankful I had booked our other nights in Portland at a different hotel.
When we went to park at the hotel parking lot, there were two cars with smashed windows/break ins. Obviously this is out of the hotels control, but it also wasnt a warm welcome to the area.
The front desk person I checked in with was unwelcoming and seamed annoying that we were there.
We were told it would be $25 for checking in an hour and a bit early. I was fine to pay it, but usually hotels have a bit more flexibility with being only an hour or two early--and since the room was ready, it seamed unnecessary.
When checking out, our card was deactivated 1 min over checkout time, so we had to go downstairs to reactivate it to get the rest of our bags out of the door. That was frustrating when we waiting so long for the elevator when taking a few trips with our bags.
There are very little lighting where the rooms are and the walls are painted black,making it hard to navigate to your hotel room.
The rooms are European-tiny-- There is nowhere to sit other then the bed, which takes up the whole room. These rooms would not work for families and those travelling with kids. The style of the room is cool, but not practical if you have someone with you.
This specific MOXY hotel is fantastic. Staff are 10/10 sweetie pies! Everyone is so friendly and feel welcoming. The bed is the most comfortable hotel bed I’ve ever stayed in and the better is great too! The Rooms are quaint but got a single person here for business it’s great. Pretty good sized mini fridge too! The gym has a fantastic ambience, a little dark which I had no idea I’d love so much. Everything I needed and more. Now let’s talk about the room service… I ordered in both nights I stayed and enjoyed it so much. It’s super fast and really great food. The chips and pico de gallo had me re order the second time. This may just be my favorite hotel in downtown Portland. The vibes are just everything you want. So hall I have this one a try.
