Cascada Thermal Springs + Hotel

Cascada opened in Portland's Alberta Arts District in December 2024 as the city's first hotel built around underground thermal springs, pairing 100 guest rooms with a three-story LEED Platinum spa complex. It's the debut hospitality project from local sustainable-development firm Solterra, and it positions itself squarely as a wellness destination rather than a conventional city hotel.

The place

Cascada sits at 1150 NE Alberta Street in the Alberta Arts District, a newly built five-story building over a basement level, a short walk from the neighborhood's gallery and mural strip rather than downtown's convention core.

The concept

This is the first hospitality project from Solterra, a Portland design-and-build firm that has focused on sustainable, design-centric construction since 2008, and it shows: the LEVER Architecture-designed building achieved LEED Platinum certification and was built around locally sourced, energy-efficient materials rather than retrofitted for sustainability after the fact. The hotel's whole premise is unusual for Portland — a three-story spa and thermal-springs complex built into the property, marketed around the idea of 'hedonistic wellness,' with the springs themselves billed as the city's first underground thermal baths. It's an adults-only (21+) property, which narrows who it's for, but that focus is consistent with the positioning: this isn't a business hotel with a spa bolted on, it's a spa built with hotel rooms attached.

Dining & wellness

The property centers on a three-story spa and fitness facility with vitality pools at varying temperatures, a salt therapy room, sauna, and steam room, plus massage and facial treatments starting around $180. On the food and drink side there's Terra Mae, a reservation-focused restaurant, along with Alberta Street Coffee and a juice bar; the hotel also runs yoga and Pilates classes and a small rotating art gallery.
