Moxy Halifax Downtown opened on January 18, 2024, the first hotel of the brand in Canada. It has 160 rooms and stands in the downtown core, a short walk from the waterfront.
JONO Developments owns the building and Hotel Equities operates it. Joe Metlege and Norman Nahas are the co-owners behind JONO. Moxy, Marriott's lower-priced lifestyle brand, counts more than 125 hotels in 25 countries, and Halifax is its first Canadian address.
The address is 5417 Cogswell Street, in downtown Halifax.
On foot, the Scotiabank Centre and the Halifax Convention Centre are the nearest large venues, which explains part of the hotel's weekday trade. The Halifax Public Gardens, the Emera Oval and the Citadel National Historic Site are all within walking distance, as is the departure point of the Harbour Hopper amphibious tours. Breweries, small restaurants and a farmers market fill the surrounding streets.
The concept
The format is the one Moxy uses everywhere. There is no front desk: guests check in at Bar Moxy, and the first drink is included in the room rate. Around the bar the ground floor works as a living room, with a games room and a library.
Bedrooms are small and fitted with the connected technology the brand applies across its portfolio. The developer, Joe Metlege, calls the project the boutique hotel reimagined and says it fills a gap in a downtown that had mostly conventional business hotels. The opening material describes a modern building with industrial design touches.
Dining & wellness
Bar Moxy is both the check-in point and the center of the food and drink offer. The group describes its food and beverage as handcrafted. Menus and the names of any other outlets were not detailed when the hotel opened.
