Delta Hotels Halifax Downtown

Fifty years after it first opened inside Scotia Square as the Chateau Halifax, this downtown Barrington Street hotel has come full circle. Renovated top to bottom and reflagged in February 2026, it once again trades as Delta Hotels by Marriott Halifax Downtown, the same brand it carried for decades before a five-year run as the independent Hotel Halifax.

The place

The hotel sits at 1990 Barrington Street, built into the podium of Scotia Square in the heart of downtown Halifax and linked to the mall's shops and food court by an indoor pedway, a real convenience through a Halifax winter. The waterfront boardwalk, with its restaurants and ferry terminal, is a short walk east, and the Scotiabank Centre, the city's arena for concerts and the Mooseheads, stands directly across the street. Few addresses downtown put guests this close to both the harbour and the business district without needing a car.

The concept

The building has carried the Delta name before. It opened on January 29, 1974, as the Chateau Halifax, a 13-storey hotel built by Halifax Developments Limited with Canadian Pacific Hotels as part of the original Scotia Square complex, and later traded for decades as Delta Halifax, one of downtown's anchor properties. In 2019 the hotel lost its Delta flag and spent roughly five years operating independently as Hotel Halifax, a name change with no change of address, amid a broader softening of downtown Halifax hotel rates that year, as tracked by hospitality analyst HVS. A renovation running from April 2025 to February 2026 brought the property back into the Marriott fold, this time as Delta Hotels by Marriott Halifax Downtown. It is a return rather than a debut: guest rooms, public spaces and the restaurant were refreshed as part of the work, and HVS groups the reopening with a wider wave of downtown Halifax hotel renovations, including the Barrington Hotel, the Westin Nova Scotian and the Prince George, reshaping the market's supply at the same time.

Dining & wellness

Harbour City Bar & Grill, the hotel's restaurant, is led by executive chef Andy Camm and built around seasonal ingredients sourced from Nova Scotia farmers and fishers, backed by a substantial list of local craft beer, wine and spirits; it serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. The hotel also has an indoor pool and a 24-hour fitness centre, plus a business centre, practical amenities for a property that draws both conference and leisure guests through its Scotia Square connection.
