The place
The Memphian sits at 21 S. Cooper Street in Overton Square, Midtown Memphis's cluster of theaters, restaurants and bars around the Cooper-Young corridor — an entertainment district a few miles from downtown that had gone decades without a hotel of its own.
The concept
Developer LPI Memphis — the renamed Loeb Properties, which first proposed a roughly 100-room Overton Square hotel in 2016 — built The Memphian with partners MMI Hotel Group and LRC2 Properties, opening the $24.2 million, seven-story, 106-room property on May 4, 2021 under Marriott's Tribute Portfolio. It is new construction rather than a conversion, with jewel-tone interiors, vintage-inspired furniture and commissioned local artwork aimed at travelers who want Midtown's theater-and-restaurant scene over downtown's convention circuit.
Dining & wellness
Complicated Pilgrim, the lobby-level restaurant, serves New American comfort food from breakfast through dinner. Tiger and Peacock, a roughly 100-seat indoor-outdoor rooftop bar on the seventh floor, adds a zodiac-themed cocktail menu, a 21-and-up policy and an upscale-casual dress code, open Wednesday through Sunday evenings. There is no pool or spa; guests have access to a 24-hour fitness center.
