New hotels in River North

River North sits directly across the Chicago River from the Loop, bounded roughly by the river to the south and west, Chicago Avenue to the north and Michigan Avenue to the east. It was a warehouse and manufacturing district until the 1970s, when artists took over the loft buildings and gallery owners followed — the reason the area still holds one of the densest concentrations of commercial art galleries in the country, alongside the restaurants and clubs that arrived later. For visitors it is the most central place to stay in Chicago after the Loop itself: the Magnificent Mile is a few blocks east, the Riverwalk runs along its southern edge, and one opening we track is right in the middle of it.

What to do in River North

For a weekend

Start on the water. The Chicago Riverwalk runs continuously along the south edge of the neighborhood, and the architecture boat tours that leave from the docks near Michigan Avenue are the single best introduction to the city's built history — the Loop skyline reads differently from river level.

North of the river, the gallery district around Superior and Franklin Streets can absorb an afternoon. The Merchandise Mart, completed in 1930 and for decades the largest building in the world by floor area, occupies two full blocks on the riverfront. Eastward, Michigan Avenue's Magnificent Mile begins at the bridge and runs north past the Wrigley Building and Tribune Tower.

For a longer stay

River North's advantage is that almost everything is walkable from it. The Loop starts across the bridges, with the Art Institute, Millennium Park and the theater district. Streeterville is east, holding Navy Pier and the Museum of Contemporary Art. The West Loop and Fulton Market, Chicago's most active restaurant district, are about fifteen minutes away.

Transit is good: the Brown and Purple Lines stop at Merchandise Mart and Chicago Avenue, the Red Line runs under State Street with stops at Grand and Chicago, and both connect to O'Hare and Midway with a change.
