New hotels in Chelsea

What to do in Chelsea

For a weekend

Walk the High Line from its southern entrance at Gansevoort Street north to Hudson Yards, then detour into Chelsea Market for lunch — it's directly beneath the park at 15th Street. Spend an hour or two gallery-hopping the West 20s between Tenth and Eleventh Avenues, one of the densest concentrations of contemporary art galleries in the city, most with free admission.

For a longer stay

With more time, the Whitney Museum of American Art sits at the High Line's southern end, worth a half-day on its own. Chelsea Piers, along the Hudson, has sports and recreation facilities if you want a break from museums and galleries — batting cages, golf, ice skating and a climbing wall among them.

The gallery-and-High-Line core, closest to the park itself. East Chelsea, toward Sixth Avenue (West 20s)

A more practical, less gallery-dense stretch bordering the Flatiron District. Hyatt Place New York Chelsea, on West 24th Street, blends the neighborhood's gallery and loft-building history with the office and retail density spreading west from Flatiron — a straightforward, value-oriented base for the same High Line and Chelsea Market access without Faena's price point.
